What's with the afternoon format change? No more Joe, Rob and Dave? Was yesterday just a blip or do we have to listen to Joe all by his lonesome from now on? Dave Rowe's never been more than a bit of filler but I miss Rob. Things picked up a lot, IMHO, when Rob came on in the second hour and argued with Grant P from Global.
I prefer Rob keeping Joe on his toes. Anyone else care?

I usually listen to it from 2-2:30 everyday, but this Joe by himself stuff is awful. There's no conversation aspect to it. I also noticed Rob's show is now Sportsline, instead of The Hockey Show. Maybe they are feeling the pinch of not having the NHL?

Isn't Sportsline from 4-5? The Hockey Show has always started at 5pm, and I will assume that segment has not been changed

There is a new format.
Dave Roe - 9-10
Jim Rome - 10-1
Joe Sports 1-4
Rob Kerr 4-6
I think Rob was sick today. As he was on the Radio at 3:00pm yesterday

I get the feeling that if the lockout isn't solved soon, there'll be some bleeding at the Fan & there'll be layoffs.
And Rob Kerr is the best thing going at that station & they'd be smart to keep him around & Kevin Usselman the worst. How he keeps his job on an all sports radio format is beyond me.

It definately seems to me that the Fan has more on air talent on the payroll than they need:
- Mike Richards
- Kevin Ussleman
- Rob Kerr
- Colin Smith
- Dave Rowe
- Rick Lafitt (sp?)
- Peter Maher
Now some of these guys may have other responsibilities but it seems likes thats a lot, particularly when they are only really producing their own programming for 9 hours a day (if my math is correct), M-F. The rest is ESPN feeds or games (or Jim Rome). So 7 guys for 9 hours of programming? That's high.

Especially for a last place station. Now that there's no Flames revenue coming in it's only a matter of time before people are dropped.

Dropping staff would suck. I've listened to the fan for a couple years now. In my opinion, their own shows are the best they've ever been. I love Mike Richards in the morning (the other two clowns are just filler). I loved the old Big Show format with Joe Rob and Dave (though Dave could take a hike). The Hockey Show was awesome but without NHL hockey, what do you do?
Hopefully changes are temporary and can get back on track later.

The 2 guys I'd lose fast if there were going to be layoffs are Rick Lafitte (sp?) & Kevin Usselman. I can live with Dave Rowe.

Well, some of these guys can be moved to other Rogers stations in Calgary temporarily.
That said, who knows if they are actually short...Kelly Krisch seems to be filling for someone on a weekly basis.
As I said, lets get The CalgaryPuck radio show on the air!

Rick Lafitte is one of the better guys on air at the FAN. I find him incredibly witty and in the little time he is given to actually discuss issues it is always well thought out and intelligent.
I'll always remember a comment from him a few months ago when the guys were discussing the Bertuzzi incident and how there were the Free Bert ralleys. Rick just blurts out "where the hell's the Steve Moore rally?" Just the timing of it and how he said it made it funny as hell.

Has anyone noticed in the last week or so the ever-increasing amount of generic Rogers/Fan radio promos? Seems like the same announcer and background music every station under the same banner plays. And what about the espn music during 20/20 sports updates? Do you think that's just a perk from carrying the espn feeds so often or a sign of the apocolypse?

That means that commerical time is on unsold and is being filled with promos. Even at the best of times if you listened to that station 35% of the commercials would be trying to sell Rogers phones or Rogers Sportsnet.

The sheer volume of commercials is somewhat indicative of the financial state of the station. You can listen for half an hour and hear 15-20 minutes of commercials. Guess that gives JosSports more time to post on calgarypuck...
What I meant above was that much of the announcing for the promos now seems to be produced generically by Rogers rather than in house. I don't recognize the voice as one of the regulars at the station. I could be wrong...

Yeah, they started that a couple of weeks ago. I emailed the fan and told them that I didn't like the change. My phone # was in my email sig, and Kelly Kirsch called me and explained that they were going through a format change. I said they're starting to sound like more of a melodramatic news station, but he said they aren't planning on going back. Oh well.

Those 20/20 updates sound goofy with background music... And ten minutes of sports followed by nearly 10 minutes of updates & commercials is stupid, too.
I take back what I said about Lafitte, but not Usselmann.
Anybody notice Jock Wilson doing sports talk with Mark Stevens weekday evenings 9-11 on CHQR??? I thought that was rather ironic, in itself since Jock was in competition with Stevens 5 years ago on 66 CFR & the station he was fired from is now owned by Rogers Sportsnet. Wilson's own sidekick back then was Kevin Usselmann... Yecccch!!
Stevens needs a sidekick because (a) he's much too serious at times & (b) is much better debating issues with a partner rather than talking alone about them.

Oh man, what torture that would be! One hour is bad enough with Dave as a lead. The guys a good sidekick, but he's terrible as a lead. And I need less Rick, please. The guy is completely useless on there, IMO.
I do like Joe and Rob together though. Good pair.

Joe and Rob, I agree, work well together. I enjoy their (staged or not) arguments about some issues. Dave Rowe is not very entertaining. I can stomach Rick Lafitte because I can actually listen to him by himself and not become annoyed. Kevin Ussellman is useless. His role always is the same. He was a cheerleader for Jock Wilson, then Joe Sports and now Mike Richards. Sometimes I can almost picture the look on Richards' face when Usselman tries some of him stand-up comedy or let's go with a moronic comment. His attempts to keep up to his co-workers humor is pathetic. Maybe his dad Michael Usselman, who also owns a box company, owns the Fan960 and insists that his son play QB. The comparisons are stunning... Man do I have a lot of time on my hands... how depressing.

My peoblem with Lafitte is that he has no personality. His voice while I guess is the classic radio voice, that is, pleasant to listen to, never changes. It's like he's a Vulcan or something. It's always the same.
I don't mind Dave Rowe. But let's face it, he is just filling in an hour before Jim Rome. There's not much that the format or time allows him to do.
