Its not about the virus, its about business. If the Chinese can reduce foreign competition in its own market they're going to take that advantage.
We talk about retaliating against the States for their protectionist moves, but nobody ever talks about decades of unfair trade practices by the Chinese. The world has let the Chinese seal their markets to us where they flood our markets with their "stuff". At some point thats going to have to be addressed.

It will only be addressed when we tax the eff out of goods from China so Canadian goods can be competitively priced.

After a series of embarrassing food recalls and scandals, this is China's turn to make to throw their weight around. It's all political Tit for Tat

Why did they ban pork?
Does the swine flu interfere with their doping practices?

I completely agree with that.
Good luck getting China to ever re-open their markets to our pork.

It's an insane world we live in. China imposes a 30% tariff on all imported goods, while being on the beneficial end of the world's greatest trade imbalances, to the point that all major countries must now ignore this problem as well as human rights concerns because of currency and debt issues. And this has all happened in just over ten years!!!
The special status China receives under WTO needs to be reviewed as soon as possible. I'm in China, living off the economy so to speak, and a 30% reciprocal tax from Canada, the US, and other importing nations against Chinese goods would definitely hurt me more than this recession has, but it's past time to end this nonsense. Pork imports from Canada are probably very low considering how cheaply pork is raised here in China. But this is an unnecessary slap in the face to a country that has brought a lot more benefit than it has received. It is a slap that I hope wakes people up.

I can understand why they didn't publish the infected farm.
Can you imagine being that employee - he went on vacation, came back, discovered he was sick, and now all Canadian pork is banned from something like 9 countries.
I guess it took too long for them to rename the flu to H1N1 (or, as PM Harper said, "Mexican" flu)

Its all a political game. The West raised a stink about China's products, and China raises a stink back about West's pork in retaliation. Like someone posted, its tit-for-tat politics.

The difference is between legitimate health concerns and what... saving face? Give me a break. Maybe China should stop trying to get all that it can and start playing fairly.

While I agree, I just like to point out that China isn't the only country that plays this type of game. The US was among the last countries to unban Canadian beef during the whole mad cow thing, even though they had issues with their own beef. Every country is protectionist in some way or another. In theory, trade pacts are suppose to make things easier, in practice though, it's not perfectly fair

I just think it's petty, and considering the huge trade imbalance, unnecessary. They want to play this game? Really? Let them. Unfortunately, I can't see any intelligent response from Canada.

My question is: When will China start killing off their own pigs?
