Default Problem with a Dell computer

Alright, I have a Studio XPS 435, and I had to put in a bigger power supply to handle BFG video card.

After I plug everything in, and hit the power button, the fans, and it sounds like the harddrive....start up, and just sitting there spinning but nothing is happening.

The light on the power button is orange.

Any idea what to do?

This is the second power supply I've had to use....first one had a messed up solder joint when I tried to use it.

Sounds like your missing one of the plugs on your PS. There should be a square 4 pin one (similar to the main one you plug in, only smaller) that should plug in near the CPU.

I did the same thing when I installed a new PS and had the exact same symptoms.

I did plug that one in, and it still does the same thing.

Orange indicator light comes on, and all the fans/harddrives start up, but nothing happens.

Azure, this is off topic...I used to love the deadlift! That was probably my greatest lift!

Yep!

I love it too. Squat is a close second.

All because of Mark Rippitoe.

Just to clarify, did you put a "Memory Express" Power supply into a Dell? If so, you are lucky you didn't let all the smoke out of your system.

I haven't tried it in a while (because I don't like the smell of computers smoking) but Dell's P/S's are extremely propritary. (sp?) It's pretty much the only part that cannot be swapped out for another brand.

Dell PSU have not been proprietary for quite sometime(my brothers old Dimension 4600 for example has a standard PSU).

But getting back to the OP, Dell rates their PSU at the sustaned wattage, while PSU producer generally use peak wattage. So while that 475 watt would likely be comparable to 550 watt power supply.
