They don't have wild horses at Suffield anymore. They rounded them all up in the mid 90's and sold them.
I didn't realize there was a law against shooting wild horses. Obviously you can not shoot from a vehicle or within 100 meters of a road (I could have the distance mistaken). Do theses horses in this area have a special status? Or is it illegal to discharge firearms in this area? I am not condoning the actions of the people involved. Just curious as what the actual charges would be?

It's really inhumane. There is no rationale for it but it could be some really sick and bitter rancher who has lost some horses. Wildies are notorious for turning up on ranchland and having people's domestic horses run off with them. Perhaps some lonely and bitter old man who has had a few horses take off to join the wildies?
I've been packing up in the Rockies and it can be pretty nervewracking when you know there are only a handful of grassy feeding pastures and are almost expecting some wildies to show up there and take away some of your horses.

How sad is it that that's the first song that pops into your head when you think "Wild Horses"...
I actually had The Stones and U2 before Gino Vanelli, then again I never had a black car, let alone one that looked batter in the shade.

I remember working on a rig near Sundre, and came across these horses a few times. Took some pictures of them. I thought it was special that there were wild horses just roaming around. Being a city boy, until then I didn't know there were herds of wild horses.

Really? It has been over 20 years since I took Hunters Ed in Jr. High, but I gotta think it is 100 to 200 meters from a road. What about fields without fences?
Edit: I looked it up. It doesn't say anything about how far you need to be from a road. Just that you cannot fire a rifle across or from a road.
According to Ealey, Alberta's wild horses are descended from stock brought in by loggers in the early 1900s. The Department has been conducting surveys of its population for the past 25 years, and it has recorded up to 450 horses. Typically the population is 200-300 horses. Capture permits--through which members of public apply for licenses to capture the horses--keep the population numbers steady.
Ealey said around 20 horses are removed each year. Permit holders can rope or use corrals to capture the horses--firearms and snares are not permitted. They must also capture three studs for every mare brought in. The department does not grant permits when the population is less than 200 horses for two consecutive years.
Ealey said there are criminal code penalties for shooting wild horses that are different than those in place for wildlife poaching.
"Basically the legislation is that it's illegal to shoot or hunt horses," Ealey said. "The criminal code allows the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) to lay charges if they've got sufficient evidence. We're trying to get information from the public for anything they have on who's doing this."
Pretty cool that there still are some wild horses running around.
I think they should start fencing off the land and let them roam. When there get to be too many of them, start catching and breaking them for ranch use.
There is a huge horse killing plant near Fort McLoud.....thousands of horses there waiting to be killed and be sent off to France in a box.

Yeah, there are no specific regulations, but the rule of thumb is as long as you get to the fencline, or a reasonable approximation, then the fish cops won't have a problem with it.
