Default Windows XP Windows Explorer Problem

Again, apologize for my ignorance but... my wife's laptop (IBM Thinkpad) running XP... when she turns the computer on (cold or re-boot), she gets the "windows explorer needs to close message", sometimes over & over, sometimes stops after 2 or 3 prompts to send error report. Sometimes, the machine just freezes. The tech @ IBM told her to use a rescue disk and re-install factory software - didn't do much good. I tried using a free registry cleaner - that doesn't seem to have helped much either.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. If I haven't provided enough info, please let me know.

This wasn't tied in to a message beforehand about genuine windows was it?

When you say you used a disk to re-install factory software... did you do a repair of windows or did you completely re-format the hard drive and start from scratch?

No, it's legit - she has a real IBM Thinkpad with factory-installed stuff, and to answer the second question, IBM sent her a "rescue & recovery" package, which re-installed all the factory software from scratch, and in the process wiped out anything that was saved on the HD. Sounds like a re-format.

Yeah usually that is a total rebuild.

But that is what is strange about the message she is getting. Windows Explorer is the interface - the thing that displays the windows. That is a software issue and a rebuild should have fixed that.

When you do get into the OS next time, you should go into the Event Viewer and see what messages are logged.

I'm guessing an updated driver is triggering this issue (but I am still surprised the rebuild didn't fix it).

Thanks - will try. Is there some useful piece of freeware that can help with these issues?

So, I checked the event log and this is the error info - any insight appreciated :

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0xffff025b.

Unfortunately that doesn't reveal anything.

And I'd bet if You called IBM support, they'd tell you to re-install the OS again.

Do you get the same message if you boot up in Safe Mode?
