Default Winch Info Please

I have a jeep waiting for me in Calgary, I will be picking it up in June. I want to but a winch but not sure what to get.

I know Warn are the best but does anyone know of a place in Calgary that might have some on sale...they are damn $$$.

What other brands are good? Any good places to shop in Cow town?

I will need something around 9000lbs I guess.

Thanks!

Costco typically has some.

Are you going to install it yourself? If so, I gotta agree with Svartsengi.

No I won't have time to install it myself. I will want to buy the winch and have it installed same day. I will be buying a winch mount and it will be in Calgary ready to install as well. Basically this is what it will look like depending on what winch I get of course.

Can't go wrong with Warn. They even have a slick one that has an air compressor built in so you can use air-rachets or fill up your tires. I'd try and buy one over the internet, but considering the state of the dollar you might wanna check one of the 4x4 shops in town.

The warn XD9000i looks like something I would want. Is anyone familiar with this particular model?

Check some of the 4x4 forums on the net and see what people use or think of it. Thats usually what I do before buying something pricey like that.

As an avid 4wheeler, I've got a bit of experience in this matter...

The winches that Costco sells (Champion) are crap (cheaply made, no power, very slow).
Princess Auto sells Superwinch. They're good.
Warn is good... but you are paying for the name and all the advertising they do.
I have a T-max 9000. Its a good winch.... good price too. Four Wheel Performance Center in Edmonton sells them.
Mile Marker makes a good hydraulic winch but I wouldn't buy their electric.

Good info, I have heard a lot of the same things. I was also looking at the T-Max as it seems quite comparable to the Warn.

I will give them a call and see what they can do for me on a price.

Any suggestions for a mount or is the one I have listed good?

Thanks!

That mount looks just fine.

One sugestion though.. buy a winch cover when you get your winch. It will protect the winch from elements and dirt and mud. With it sitting right on top of your jeep bumper, its pretty exposed.

Hey Rerun, what is the difference between the EW-9000 and EW-9000W

Regular vs Outback? What one do I want?

ORRR

DO I want this one, the EWI-10000 completely intergrated whatever that is!

Before buying a winch you need to look carefully at their true pull ratings. Some manufacturers of more affordable winches will rate them as 9000lb pull winches but they hide in the ratings that this is under a double line pull. You can not go wrong with a Warn. I have a Warn M8000 on my Jeep and it has payed for itself a few times. Another thing worth looking at is some of the more affordable brands line speeds. Most of the times the Warn has a line speed twice as fast as the competitors when the winch is unloaded.

And usually a rule of thumb for winches is you want to get one that is capable of pulling double your vehicles weight in a single line pull.

The first pic has the std solenoid box (the black box) which is contolled by a wired contoller. I have this one. This unit is the least expensive. The second unit wasn't available when I bought my winch.

The second winch is the same thing as the first except it has a solenoid unit (the silver box) which can be operated by both a wireless controller and it has a backup wired controller. This is the one I'd buy. It (the solenoid unit) is also much more water/moisture resistant than the first unit. T-max calls the solenoid "anti-water".

You don't have to leave the solenoids mounted on the winch. You can mount them elsewhere in a more protected location (which I have done to mine).

The third unit is of course a 10,000 winch with an integrated solenoid unit ( permanently attached to the winch) and it is rated as submersible. It is also the most expensive. This winch can also be operated remotely (it also has a wired controller too, that you can plug into the solenoid, in case your remote stops working).

Lets compare the Warn xd9000 to the T-max EW9000 (see above specs posted by MJK

Frankly, the only difference I can see, other than price (Warn is much more expensive), is the T-max has a 6.6 hp motor while the Warn has a 4.6 hp motor

Note: T-max's are known for running fairly cool under heavy loads (as compared to other winches).... probably because of the large hp motor. In order to pull 9000 lbs a 6.6 hp motor only has to work 2/3rds as hard as a 4.6 hp motor.

I am sold on the T-Max, great reviews everywhere. So what one do I get??

The only thing that worries me a little is how will the T-Max perform in the extreme cold, complete opposite from its testing grounds in Australia.

Did you try....

Don't worry about cold performance. It won't be an issue.
