Calgary best city on the planet: Toronto Board of Trade
http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2009/0...t-calgary.html
Quote:
The board launched its first-ever study of the world's biggest cities on Tuesday, measuring urban locations in terms of quality of life and economic competitiveness.
"Calgary's blistering economy over the past five years may have powered it to the top, but its overall favourable environment provides a solid basis for attracting and keeping people," according to the report, which was called Scorecard on Prosperity.
Calgary was the only city to earn an overall grade of "A." Dallas was next up, garnering a "B" grade in the report, slightly ahead of another "B" city, Hong Kong.

...But we're all just a bunch of rednecks with no culture or character! ...Right?

They always butter you up just before they hit you up for a loan.
Wow, the comments section on the above article is brutal; not a lot of Calgary fans there.

That's pretty surprising. After spending a number of months in Asia, I could think of at least 5 cities that are at least equal or better in Asia alone IMO. However, now that I said that, I'm probably going to get run out of town as some will take it as an insult.

"Okay, people get a grip, the Toronto Board of Trade are really saying Calgary is the most pro-business city. I think any city or town would win that contest. I do agree that i would not classify Calgary in this survey if they are talking about the world's largest cities since Calgary has slightly over 1 million people and that is peanuts when you look at some of the cities in China or India. With the oil prices the way they are, i am sure they will not be number 1 for very long and i heard lot of people are leaving Calgary, so will lose a lot of people. I honestly thought Edmonton would be number 1 since it has everything that Calgary has going for it and more. Snow removal in residential streets and garbage recycling in Edmonton but not Calgary. But i guess that is not important to the pro-business Toronto Board of Trade. In the very end, this is subjective and you can use different numbers to prove your point. I am happy a Canadian city was number 1 but i thought it would be Edmonton."
This is from one of the comments at the bottom of the article. Edmonton? Really?

Too big a deal is being made out of this report. It's from the TORONTO BOARD OF TRADE for crying out loud. They probably came up with this report to justify getting more government money so that Toronto can "stay competitive" with Calgary.
Like a lot of things from Toronto, the report is a crock of BS.

No kidding. I mean we all like to rag on Edmonton here of course but let's be serious. Color me surprised that Calgary is #1, but it based on business so I guess its not that surprising. Someone posted a list a little while where it was best cities to live in, and that had Calgary at #14 I believe which is pretty impressive when comparing it to the rest of the world

Lets see, big oil economy, limited environmental regulation, massive urban sprawl, very central to the bible belt...
...surprised Dallas didn't fare higher!

No matter where you live it seems there is a survey out there that says it's the best place to live for one reason or another.

Oh come on. Can't we just have a little fun? Who is making a big deal out of this report? Maybe only the people in Vancouver or Edmonton who have got their salty, grease-stained panties in a bunch. Have you read any of the comments at the bottom of the link?
I don't take this report too seriously either, but the reaction it is getting is hilarious.
