Random acts of kindness
I arrived home from work this afternoon to see my dog, a beagle, outside of my gated yard being held by a stranger. I approached them, and the man carefully explained that he spotted her while he was driving and wanted to make sure she was safe. He looked familiar, and it dawned on me that I knew him.
I asked him if he was who I thought he was, and he politely told me he was.
You see, that beagle, Mandy, is a notorious "escape artist" that we acquired from a neighbor when she was several months old, and she was virtually untrained when we got her. She wasn't housebroken, her barking would raise the dead, she wouldn't walk properly on a leash and she bolts if there's even a glimpse of daylight when the yard gate's being closed. Even though she's a royal pain in the butt, she's precious to my young children. We had another dog, Elvis, but he passed away two days ago. Elvis was a mutt - a rescue animal - and he'd been gradually winding down......that is, until we added the beagle to the mix. Mandy was a fountain of youth for Elvis - or, as we sometimes referred to him, the "King." Elvis would play with her, and he did up until just a day or two before he passed away at 13.
Mandy's now housebroken, we've been able to control the barking, she walks (relatively) well on a leash, but, damnit, she still hits the road running if given a sliver of a chance. I guess one of my kids left the gate ajar after getting home from school and my wife let the dog out.
At any rate, back to today: the guy who spotted my dog, pulled over and parked, and made sure my animal was safe? None other than Tracey Kelusky of the Roughnecks. I thanked him profusely - and congratulated him on the championship - but words can't express my gratitude. I did some research on the 'net, and it turns out Kelusky teaches lacrosse at the school in my neighborhood. I'll be sure to take the kids to more 'Necks games next season.
Thanks for listening.
