Evolution of Calgary's Gang War
All started in the hood. I feel sorry for the legitimate students of Forest Lawn High, but that school and anyone who comes from it has been branded. I guess for at least the past 20 years.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ev...271/story.html
Before FOB and FK, there was the"Runaway Gang."
That's the nickname police investigators gave a ragtag bunch of troublemakers who either attended Forest Lawn High School or spent time hanging around the school a decade ago.
"We watched this group of goofy kids develop into a gang," recalls Henry Hollinger, a retired Calgary police officer who was working in the intelligence unit at the time.
Huu Pham, a 15-year-old from Calgary, was in a fourth-floor Edmonton apartment when a police tactical team burst through the door on Sept. 24, 1999.
Pham and another man fled to the balcony and climbed over the railing. Both died of head injuries when they fell to the pavement below.
Can't ask for a better resolution to the problem then this. How do we get them all to move into highrise apts?
The raid was part of an investigation by RCMP and Edmonton police into a cocainetrafficking organization. Son Nguyen and Tan Diep, who later became members of FOB, were also swept up in the police operation.
"They went to Edmonton as baby gangsters and came back to Calgary as big-time gangsters,"Hollinger says.
It's that damn West Ed mall!

Hey, at least I feel comfortable walking the streets in Calgary. calgary is the best city in Canada- hands down. edmonton on the other hand is jealous of calgary because Calgary is better than edmonton in every way possible...

Pheng's killing, like 23 of the 25 with confirmed links to the war between FOB and FK, remains unsolved.
|
Isn't that disturbing to anyone else?
Honestly, these gangs are being watched, I would assume with great scrutiny by the police and "gang" units that we have, and these gangs have killed 25 people, yet the vast majority of them go unsolved? How is that even possible?

As long as they keep it between themselves and dont cause any more collateral damage, I hope they keep on keepin on. Reduce their numbers.

You can't get a conviction without evidence and testimony, and I'm assuming that's rather non-existent here. I imagine the police know who is responsible for the majority of the killings, they just don't have the ability to prove it in court.

Well, in the article, it mentions that nobody is willing to testify or provide information.
I haven't lived in any other city other then Calgary, so I don't know how it is in other cities, but this is starting to feel like something out of TV shows and movies. Kind of scary and really sad at the same time.

I don't believe in evolution. Gangs are only 8,000 years old.

Is it crazy to admit that I'm 100x more concerned about arson than I am gangs? Not saying gangs are a problem, I'm just looking at how they impact me directly compared to other threats in the city.

You can't live your life in fear, but I think everyone in the lower mainland is a little more apprehensive these days. You never know when and where these shootings are going to happen, and who gets caught in the crossfire.
Its not like innocent people don't get hurt, they do. Calgary's had a few occassions where an innocent person was hurt/killed in this stuff. They don't affect you directly until you or someone you know is in the wrong place, wrong time.

I do agree, I just look at it as a stats thing. We've had one guy lose his vision and one other die in calgary (off the top of my head, there could have been more). This is absolutely tragic and senseless, but no more so in my opinion than it would be to get killed by a drunk driver (which is far more likely). It just seems to me that at the moment there are more dangerous things happening in Calgary that people aren't paying as much attention to.

The problem is that there are innocent by-standers that get involved.

I think it's just that the police force decides to direct their time elsewhere. As long as the gangs aren't killing innocents, I don't think too many of these gang related shootings are being heavily investigated for a number of reasons. One of them is not having anyone involved co-operate, and then there's the whole police force being understaffed issue. Just let them kill themselves off I say!

Had an idea!

Yeah, its all good when they shoot each other.....but its inevitable that they kill an innocent bystander at times.
It has happened before, and it'll happen again.

I'd have some amount of respect for these gangs if they could at least come up with cool names and uniforms.
