Hypermiling
Anyone else into this? I'm far from an 'extreme' hypermiler, but I get some kind of (sick?) joy out of seeing how high I can get the number on my trip odometer each fill-up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypermiling
Last time I filled up, I went 170km on almost exactly 1/4 of my tank of gas in a Ford Focus wagon ... which I've seen mileage numbers hovering around 9.2L/100km. Gas tank capacity is about 52L or so. Not Earth-shattering numbers, but still.
Generally all I do is try to anticipate red/green lights to avoid excessive acceleration or braking; take turns at higher than normal speed to minimize braking and keep my tires inflated a bit more than normal.
All this being said, I don't drive like a complete fata out there ... I am mindful of others and don't impose my will on others but I thought it might be an interesting discussion ... you seem to get a lot of people championing aggressive driving/speeding and I am wondering if I am the only one who drives this way!

I have never heard the term before, but yes I do.
My car is supposed to get 8.3L/100km in the city, and I managed to drive it at 7.3L/100km for one fill last summer.

When I bought my truck I barely got 300km per tank. $3000 in parts later I get about 750km per tank.

It's one of those completely geeky things I find interesting. Love that some guy got over 200mpg in a fuel economy competition. Of course, getting numbers like that ... you're probably breaking a law of some sort ...

I have kept track of my mileage and gas stats since I got my car. I do so in excel.
I could probably write a book on all the statistical analysis I have done.

I do this only when I realize my tank is low and I need to get from A to B back to Home again without refilling because I'm late for school or work etc.

I do this for city driving but on the highway I believe in blowing the carbon out of the motor. My motorcycle is prone to carbon buildup so I have to do something to counteract it.

I do, but I usually break the habit when i have some gas. I am typically too lazy to refill the tank right away, so I hypermile when I am low. Driving can be pretty exciting when your guage shows below empty. It is a good way to give yourself a false sense of accomplishment when you make it all the way home, or to wherever you are going...

I'm the same as a few, I do it when my tank is low. I'm quite the opposite when it's not though. I don't break traffic laws, and I don't speed, I swear!!!...but I do enjoy accelerating quickly, and not slowing down to suggested speeds on interchanges.

I basically do it when I can in the city. On the highway, not so often. I usually coast on off ramps and that's basically it.
Also, when you are on highways, cruise control helps to keep your gas consumption constant as you're not constantly braking/accelerating.
on a 55L Tank, the most I squeezed out of it before filling up is a little over 700km (basically all highway). I drive a Mazda 3, rated at 6.4L/100KM highway and 9.1L/100KM City

I guess I'm a hypomiler. Speed is my objective ... I drive mostly rural secondary hardtop.

I drive an 2004 Chevrolet Impala SS 3.8L V6 Supercharged, and if I hypermile it, I can get 25 or 26 MPG. Right in around the 9-9.5L/100 km mark which I think is pretty damn good for a car of that weight and with that much power. So if i'm getting similar numbers to a Ford Focus, and I can still have my supercharger, i'm laughin. Although I do pay for high test fuel.
But once summer comes and I get my summer tires on, hypermiling usually goes out the window. I like to hear the exhaust rumble and the supercharger whine. Screw these sissy 4 cylinder tin cans.

I'm not a hypermiler. Definitely don't have the patience for that. It drives me crazy when I'm behind someone that is rolling slowly toward the red light anticipating the green. Crazy I tell ya!
But I do reset my trip meter every time I fill up. And if I got lousy fuel economy on my last tank, I respond by driving less aggressive for about 5 minutes.
My version of hypermiling is knowing probably 90% of the good shortcuts/less busy roads/times of day to drive.
