Default Need a new router.

Got digital phone last night along with digital tv along with previously upgrading my internet connection. Tech guy confirmed what I suspected that my oldie goldie router could must definitely use replacing.

So what to replace it with? Just a name brand router? Are there routers that are better for some situations over others or do they all just do the same job and you get what you pay for?

just another point of view as i am sure you will get plenty of folks telling you to get linksys or whatever else is popular.

a few years back when i was looking for a new router, i stumbled onto dd-wrt which is a firmware upgrade for routers that allows all sorts of advanced features. it all started on the linksys wrt54g router. i was going to get that one, but the dd-wrt forums suggested that buffalo routers got better range than the linksys ones. so i bought this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162134

It has worked great for me for several years now. its something i always try and advocate as another option to the big boys.

Go with Porter Cable. It's so fast and powerful, it can literally destroy Linksys and a lot of the other routers out there.

That would be cool to see. How small are the pieces after it is done?

I don't think Norm uses them on "New Yankee Workshop" so really how good can they be?

As much as I'm not a fan of overprice Apple Accessories, I did break down and get an Airport Extreme for my WinTel system. Lots of reviews put it ahead of most N and gigabit based routers.

I second this one...I've had an Airport Extreme for about a year now, much better range than the D-Link or Linksys N routers we have at the office. Also is super reliable haven't had a dropped connection since i installed it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Linksys WRT160N. What a total POS those are. The latest firmware doesn't work properly - lots of DNS issues.

How good are the content filtering features on the DD-WRT?

The one I have works fine, however I have not updated any firmware. What issues were you having that you decided to update?

I didn't update it - it came with firmware 11 out of the box (latest). Worked fine for a day, then url's stopped resolving. Could only hit cached sites. Finally looked at the Linksys forum and many others are having the same issue. Contacted support and they were no help at all. Went back to the old router.

Do you still need one? I have 2 2Wire gateways lying around since my upgrade with Telus, and I was going to recycle them this week. Shoot me a message if you're interested in one for gratis.

Linksys W5RTG (i think is the model number) with Tomato firmware.

You should be able to get one for 20-30 bucks and the tomato firmware makes it a super-router.

you need to get a WRT45GL. Every since Cisco bought Linksys they made the standard WRT54G closed source so you can't use those anymore. The L version costs $10 more but it is worth it.

Agreed WRT54GL is the one to get. Flashing it with DD-WRT or Tomato is easy and gives you a lot more functionality. I've been running various versions for 3-4 years and wouldn't go back.

Or, if you're a real nerd, and you've got an old PC with 2 network cards laying around, you can run pfSense (FreeBSD based - http://www.pfsense.org/). I run it off the cd in an old Pentium 3 with no hard drive. Config files are stored on a USB key. It has *WAY* more functionality and power than any of the little Linksys, D-Link, or Buffalo routers.
