If you won the lottery, would you work?

As I head back to work, after 2.5 months of blissful unemployment, I wonder...

1. Would I work if I won the lottery?
2. How much would I need?

My answer?
1. Not likely. Probably just "manage" my portfolio about 20-30 hrs per week.
2. Hmm ... $40M?

A good portion of that work might be managing investments.

There are so many things that I'd rather be doing then working why would I work? I'd be able to travel whenever and wherever I wanted. I could take up golf seriously and get the best instructor so that I'd actually have a chance at not being terrible. See a Senators game in every NHL rink.

well managed i think 15mil could last me. Of course some would be spread around to friends and family too.

More time for watching hockey, playing hockey, working out, dating women, travelling the world, reading books, watching movies, listeneing to music, writing music and dating women. I'd build a house, work on countless personal projects and do what I want.

Not a damn chance! Well, at least not for someone else. I'd likely travel for awhile, then either open some sort of business that I really enjoyed and didn't care if it turned huge profits, or just play day-trader or some such financial thing....or both!

I know a guy who won $12 mill after taxes in the Mass lottery. He however didn't take the lump sum, don't know if he had a choice. His wife works in a retail store, he sits in the garage and drinks . It's been like that for 4 years. Maybe his dream is to sit around and get drunk. It just makes me cringe!!

I wouldn't work for someone else. I've thought about some things I would do with a big lotto win. Obviously take care of my family and friends first. I'd like to start a private school that would be free for students who want succeed academically but who's parents can't afford a private education. I'd also build a hockey rink for youth leagues that didn't compete with figure skating and public skating for ice time. There would also be no politics allowed and it would be clean. The warm rooms would be warm, the locker rooms wouldn't be gross and the spectator area would have excellent sightlines.

I have two different friends that each know someone that has won the lottery. One was $5 mil, the other, I can't remember. Long story short, both were broke within 5 years.

I understand the desire to travel and enjoy life. That's obvious. Maybe it's just me, but I get alot of satisfaction from work. Maybe I'm lucky that I do something that I really enjoy, but I've had jobs that I hated and I still got some satisfaction out of doing them well.

I really don't think I could just throw away my boots and sit on a beach all day, everyday, for years. I'd need projects. And not just personal projects like restoring a car, I'd need to accomplish things that would, at the very least, keep my bank account above the level it got to with the lottery win.

I for sure would quit my current job and travel and golf a lot. I might take the first year to decide what I want to do with the money, investments, etc and not make any big purchases until I was a bit more educated and comfortable with my riches.

I only buy tickets when the jackpot gets higher than $20 million. But really, I'd be happy winning more than just free tickets!

I agree. I need to feel like I'm achieving something. Every November Mike shows me his $1mill plus check from Mass. So he just has 8 more years of that. He comes from kind of a rough neighborhood near Boston. I suspect he didn't take the lump sum out of fear of blowing it all.

I have a dream job I am working at getting to. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I'd quit my curren job and work solely on achieving that dream. Atthis point, anything over 500k and I'd quit my current job.
