Sayed Pervez Kambaksh, the student journalist sentenced to death for blasphemy in Afghanistan, has been told he will spend the next 20 years in jail after the country's highest court ruled against him – without even hearing his defence.


The 23-year-old, brought to worldwide attention after an Independent campaign, was praying that Afghanistan's top judges would quash his conviction for lack of evidence, or because he was tried in secret and convicted without a defence lawyer. Instead, almost 18 months after he was arrested for allegedly circulating an article about women's rights, any hope of justice and due process evaporated amid gross irregularities, allegations of corruption and coercion at the Supreme Court. Justices issued their decision in secret, without letting Mr Kambaksh's lawyer submit so much as a word in his defence.

I'm furious, that Afghanistan accepts our help in helping to restore some order to their country while they allow this kind of judicial craziness. This is what our troops are dying for??


FU Afghanistan, if you cant move past Sharia law, we should pull all our people out of there asap. Afghanistan should be under UN sanctions not under Nato and US protection.

FU Afghanistan, if you cant move past Sharia law, we should pull all our people out of there asap. Afghanistan should be under UN sanctions not under Nato and US protection.

What a miscarriage of justice. I will point out that we are fighting so that they can pull themselves out of the stone age. We are bound to have more than a few relapses. As long as Afghanistan keeps making more Sayed Pervez Kambakshs it is worth the fight.

Well I'd say to that the European community, Canadian/US groups have been forcefully pressuring the Afghan government to release this young man, and nothing has worked. The initial sentence was death and it was overturned by outside pressure.

So after all this immense pressure, they won't even give it the proper attention it deserves, and its a outright slap in the face of every single soldier who has died in Afghanistan. They died to protect and preserve freedoms of girls to goto school, for justice and rights of the every day Afghan.

And this Afghan government does this not only once, but repeatedly in the face of overwhelming pressure by Canada/US and EU pressure.

Its nothing short of a spit in the face of what we are trying to accomplish and we shouldn't waste another death of our brave troops in defense of this corrupt Islamic nation.
