Default Its not 1984, its 2009, Saudi Style

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/...hes/index.html

This is abhorrent.

Arrested and convicted for being a female in the same home as two males unrelated to her. She is in her 70's, the two males, in their 20's. Jail plus lashings ensue.

The defence was, she breast fed one of them, so is considered a relative. The defence was not, "there is nothing wrong with that".

This country is considered an important ally of the US in the Middle East.

The article discusses a Saudi government body called "The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice."

The world is a scary place.

There is a reason the US is quietly cutting most of their ties with the Saudis. I believe many of the forces stationed in Saudia Arabia have been moved to Qatar, a much more moderate Muslim state.

I think this is the reason they are getting out of Saud, and so they should.

Hopefully sick payoffs to the US elite are no longer a reason to look the other way (to both sides of the political spectrum)

Oh goody! It's been quite a while since we've had a good Sept. 11th 2001 thread. At least a year I think.

Towards the end of that article, it was said that less hard line people have been appointed by the King. What I've heard and it may be complete bull, the Saudi Royals are forced into their stern take on the laws by the strength of the radical religious leaders. If they don't play along, they'll be replaced.
