Default Keyed Lock for a Patio Door? [Old bumped thread]

There's been a few times where it would be handy to be able to lock and unlock the sliding patio door from the outside. So I started looking into it and it seems this is a lot harder than I thought. Here's what I've tried so far:

- Home Depot sells a DIY kit to swap out the handles. Either I such at doing it, or the universal one they sell doesn't fit my door.

- Called some "Door & Glass" places. Either they don't do it, or they don't know but if I want to pay for a service call they can have a look and tell me. (They also can't tell me what the cost of said service call will be.)

- Called a couple of locksmiths. They suggest calling a door & glass place.

Has anybody else done this before? Any luck? Suggestions?

Thanks guys!

I got a lock at a place on 16th Avenue about 7-8 years ago. I can't remember the name of the place so this likely isn't any help but if anyone else knows the name of the place I think they are into glass/doors etc. It might have been called Foothills? It is on the South side of 16th Ave. a block or two west of the old Brick??? They have just want you need....

Just tried both the Yellow and the White pages. Can't find a business with a name like that.

If anybody drives down 16th, can you have a look for me? It's a long way to go for a business that may have closed with the road construction; with me being in the deep south.

Don't let the goofy website fool you. I've used these guys on a couple of occasions with great results. If you haven't already, give them a call and see if they have any suggestions.

I've done it.. I used one I got from canadian tire like 6 years ago. It was ok, works.. ok. I used it for a patio door I had on my walkout basement. I found thoes doors were prone to shifting. Sometimes the door wouldn't unlock under certain situations.

I know that their sign is there but it doesn't really look like the place is occupied. That is, if we're talking about the little place on 16th on the north side, just past center street.

Just thought I'd bump my old thread to say I finally got it done. Macker- I think I ended up going to the place you were thinking of. It was Chinook Glass. http://www.chinookglass.com/

Super nice people, and when what they had didn't look like it was going to work, the lady I was dealing with wasn't afraid to seek some help to get me the right one.

Funny story, when I showed my girlfriend what I did today she was happy, and asked how much did I spend. When I told her it was $40 ($20 for the lock and handle and $20 to have a locksmith re-key it for me), she said "well, why didn't you get that done a long time ago then!"

I may have to show her this thread to say I tried.

Do you have a separate key that you now have to carry around, or were you able to get the key uniform with the rest of the entrances for your house?
I like the idea of coming in the sliding door, but the idea of adding another key to my ring doesn't appease me.

That's why I took it to the locksmith after making sure it worked on my door. Because the lock was close enough to a Weiser lock, I was able to get it re-keyed so I just have 1 key for all my entry doors.

That little house with a Bright yellow key sign?

I think it's called... Able locks or something like that.
