Default Barenaked Ladies, Frontman Split

Page, Barenaked Ladies part ways

Quote:
Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page has left the group he helped form in Toronto to pursue his own solo projects.

In a statement posted on the band's website early Wednesday, the band said Page will be "parting company with the remaining members of the Barenaked Ladies" under a "mutual agreement."
Quote:
The other band members — Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn, Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart — return to the studio in April and will go back on the road in the fall.
Not a group I followed a lot but I liked them. Sad to see things go south for them just before their 20th anniversary.

Page is the coke head, but he is talented. I suspect Ed Robertson and the rest will do fine without him. I am not sure what will happen to Page. If he has a drug problem, he probably won't go far.

Why can't they follow Blue Rodeo's example and take a break from each other to do their own thing? Why must it be called an official split? I don't remember Jim Cuddy announcing anything. One day, BAM, new Jim Cuddy Band. After awhile, he's back with Blue Rodeo. No drama, and we got a few pretty good songs from him as a solo artist.

That's exactly what I was thinking too. If he wanted to take a break and do solo stuff, why didn't they just announce that? Weird that they announce a permenant split. Probably one of the biggest Canadian bands goes down the tubes.

Good, I cannot stand the BNLs. I cringe whenever I hear their crap.

I always thought Ed and Steve were co-frontmen.

Have a feeling this is as much a PR move for the rest of the group as it is an actual split. BNL was always pretty scandal-free and I can't think that Page being arrested for drugs was a popular thing with their new children's album to be released.

I doubt either side will go all that far sadly - much as I have loved BNL since the release of their indie album pre-Gordon back in 1991(?) or so, the last few years haven't been their best.

I will absolutely miss the concerts tho.....the shows were waaaaaaaay fun....

I agree entirely about the concerts. Very entertaining.

Initially they were. The first time I saw BNL there were only 2 of them (that was fall 88/spring 89), and they were opening for Corky and the Juice Pigs.

I think they had kept a low profile since they released a children's album and Steven Page had drug charges in the space of a few weeks.

I'm surprised this didn't come sooner considering Page's problems.

Which one is Page - the fat brown-haired guy or the fat blond-haired guy?

Or, put another way, is Page the psuedo-rapper or the one with the god awful frog-in-his-throat singing style?

Page is the one who doesn't have the show "Ed's Up" on OLN.

I would have called Page the frontman, until "One Week" blew up on the charts. Seemed like Ed got more singing/psuedo-rapper time on tracks. I actually like "Pinch Me" which was more Ed, and "Call And Answer" which was more Page...

Weird dynamic...
