Default RBC - Visa SUCKS

SO my credit has always been perfect. I have never had a late payment in my life. About 6 months ago I had an RBC VIsa card and decided it was crap so I canceled it. I paid off the balance on the card, called them up and said I wanted it canceled. It only took a couple days and the visa was gone from my online banking.

I got a letter in the mail about a month ago saying there was a $26 balance left on the Visa and that it needed to be paid right away. So I called the lady asking why the visa dissapeared from my online backing if there was still a balance on it. No one told me over the phone that there was a balance either. She said it was no big deal and I could pay it off. I specifically asked her if this was sent in to collection or if this would reflect badly on my credit history and she said no.

WRONG

I found out today that it is now showing on my credit history as 2 consecutive late payments, one over 60 days. It took me a long time to get the letter becuase they sent it to my old address. By the time it got to me in Nunavut, it was really late.

What gives? What can I do to get this crap off my credit report as I believe it is their fault and not mine.

1. When I canceled the card, no one said anything about $26.
2. I paid off my balance in full as I saw it online.
3. The card dissapered from online banking.
4. The lady told me it would not go on as bad credit which was a lie.

What do I do here?

Probably not much. The $26 was probably just interest at the end of them month. And they mailed out the bill as normal.

Call Equifax. Everyone has the right to dispute anything that is put on their credit history. Based on what you've posted, you have a case. I can't say if it's a good or bad one, but you definatly have grounds to dispute.

this doesnt help you, but in the future, when cancelling credit cards, I'd recommend paying off the balance, get the next months statment showing a zero balance (now you have hard copy proof) then cancel the card

Only that in my case, they were still sending documents to my old address even after I called and tried to get it updated. I only found it they did not have my new address when this letter showed up. Then I had to call and change it again!

If they would have changed my address the very first time, everything would be alright.

Just talked to the finance manager at the branch and he is doing everything he can for me. He also thinks it ridiculous and has escalated it for me. He sems to think it will be corrected.

well it definitely wasn't scotiabank. hehe.

I used to work for scotia visa. you won't believe how many people do not know how to calculate daily interest and even if you are penny short in paying(your min monthly payment), it gets reported to the credit bureau.

Yes I have been dealing with the finance manager at the back for awhile now. In the process of getting a mortgage as well.

I called "RBC VIsa" and they were no help. They are a bunch of call center dweebs anyways, they can't do jack squat and the finance manager told me the same thing.

I am waiting to hear back from the finance manager now we an update.

Credit cards often takes 3 or 4 days to post transactions, what you see online is always behind...not saying this was your fault, but that's just how credit cards work. I cancelled an AMEX a few months ago and it was exactly as you described, paid off what I saw online and cancelled, but I did get the final bill for $30 and paid it off in time next month, then got another statement that states $0.00 balance. So keep that in mind next time I guess...I hope it works out for you this time.

Yes I know how it works, but RBC's failure to change my address the first time I called is what has caused this fiasco.

If I had gotten the statement at my new address it would have been paid off ASAP. This is their fault IMO.

That might be the only reason you are being helped. Banks don't do much if you threaten to leave, but a sales guy about to land a deal cares about losing business.

I understand your frustration, but it took more than the banks failure to change the address to cause this. If you hadn't cancelled the account until after you got a $0 statement, you would have noticed the amount in your web banking. I am pretty sure that in the fine print of the credit card agreement it states that you are responsible to pay all your charges on time, even if you don't get a statement. I seem to remember wording like this in there the last time I read one of these.

I would still fight them too if I was in your situation. They do share a good chunk of the blame. However, putting 100% of the blame on them is not fair.

nothing surprises me with credit card companies. My wife tried 5 times to change her name on her Mastercard after we were married. We never got a new card. Everytime, the person on the other end of the phone was mystified as to why we hadn't received a card with a changed name. She finally cancelled the card. "But why??" was the question from the associate on the phone.

Fixed rate is 4.7% I think he said locked in for 5 years? I will probably go with this rate over the variable rate of 4%.

I still have to pay legal costs but becuase I live in Nunavut I qualify for a $45,000 down payment on the house which can be used to pay the lawyers.

Thoughts on my mortgage rate?

Fixed, 4.7%, 25 year bi-weekly accelerated payment.

I wish people would take responsibility for their own errors. "This is their fault IMO."

NO. You ASSUMED that you'd paid the balance but didn't follow up. You didn't make sure they had your change of address. (An excuse that sounds a bit 'iffy' because you don't mention anything about a change of address filed with the Post Office. If you'd done that, all your mail would have been forwarded.)

"I didn't know" isn't much of a defense.
