Pick-up hockey etiquette questions and stuff lol .....
Ok i am finally gonna do it ... i have been big talking bout hockey for a year now ... When it came down to it i went to a class here and there but i used the excuse that the rink is an hour away so i blew it off... Well we are moved and settled in at oklahoma and the rink is 2 mins from my house and so im gonna do it . Im finally gonna get out there and go to adult 101 classes and try to learn to skate better. I can go forward without much problem but cant stop or go backwards... Well tonight there is a class and after there is a 25 and over adult pick up game..... What is etiquette of letting a beginner play ? I am a firm believer in trial by fire and think ill pick it up faster if im out there with faster tempo than beginner class ...Will they be open to letting me on the ice , Should i not try to play pick up till i get better... etc...??? thanks guys and wish me luch

That's great!! If they're not a bunch of A-holes they should let you play. and you robably won't be the only one in your predicament. It's not like you're in some championship. I started about 2 years ago after a loooong "vacation" and there were p.eople on the team who could barely stop. In any case you get better you just go to a better team.

I wouldn't worry. I'm a woman and nowplay on a well they say it's coed but now I'm the only female. Our 2 nd goalie(female) quit. I now play center. You'll be just fine. Just show them you've got a good sense of humor and dont act like a know it all which you dont seem to btw.

you won't get better standing on the sidelines and thinking about playing. get out on the ice and try as hard as you can. when beginners come out to our shinny time, we typically give them a little more space out there, and we also let them have some degree of success (ie; don't check them hard, give them room and let them have some shots on goal) you may not get a free ticket out there and that is good. IMO, you learn more from losing and getting your butt kicked than getting an easy ride. as long as you are having fun, everybody around you should notice and help you along.

Yeah, the only etiquette I can think of is not being an a-hole to the new guy if you're a good player. No one likes the ex Junior A player who comes out to shinny, undresses all the newbies, scores 8 goals and fist pumps the whole time.
I played noon hour shinny with a bunch of really good players (as in a few semi pro) and there was a girl on the team who showed up every once in a while. When she had the puck people would give her space and let her dangle every once in a while, basically let her have some fun because if we didn't she would have never come back.
The only ones who didn't were the goalies....but they're all fags anyways so it didn't really matter.
Just go, you'll be fine.

yeah get out there, the only etiquette is that you don't hog the puck when you get it. If you find yourself in trouble and see a man open pass it to him.
Although like most have noted, ppl tend to give the slower guys a bit more room so don't feel too bad about hogging the puck.
Also, line changes. Depending on how many people are there, make sure you're getting off the ice as often as others are. In shinny there typically isn't set lines, ppl just rotate and get off when they're tired. I try not to stay on for more that 1.5-2 mintues. (depending on level of play during shinny)
I don't know if you need skating tips, but on ice the skate should be pushing to the side as much as possible. not to the back like you would be on roller blades.

I told them my situation, they said there is about 12 guys usually plus the goalies and a max of 15... all of them are older mid 30's slower paced ... the guy also said "even if its to fast for ya get on the ice you have to learn sometime , and if your gonna wear that flaming C t shirt your gonna represent on the ice" Apparently he is from red deer and plays for the chl team here and a huge flames fan! so apparently now i have to play to rep the flaming c hahaha

OK NO BUENO Those guys were not nice..... i got checked and go my ass plowed in the boards 3 times b4 the games even started....... these guys were all graduated college players from the last 4 yrs..... ( 35 and over my ass).... it was quite pointless cause i skated and was always way behind , they didnt share the puck , i scored on a rebound but other than that there was no touching the puck so i left after an hour .... i had fun but 3 times before the game even started ehh
ohh and i was told that its slower pace on friday night .. if i can move tomorrow im gonna try to go

Man I guess you got some a-holes. I was just wondering how you did. So these guys are like under 30? Yikes. But you DID it that's great. I've not had too many allowances made for me because I'm female...it depends who the guys are. Some actually get angry and act nasty!! So yeah it's rough. like we're not supposed to check in coed but we do. Especially when it's a younger guy not used to no check hockey. I'm really proud of you. Wow....

See you did great. How many people score in their first-ever game? Should we call you Nick Bertuzzi now?

That's okay. You're allowed. I like getting roughed up too but the brutal checking...yikes. It's a good thing there's no fighting.

don't give up nicker. although those arseholes weren't very nice to you, if you go back, you may start to earn their respect. also, playing against better players will elevate your game quicker than playing against players closer to you. it will be up to you to decide what you do, and no matter what that is...have fun!
