An old and controversial theory on the origins of oil and gas may be gaining a foothold, suggesting limitless supplies.

yeah, cause all the drilling we've done so far is at the surface, no damage to anywhere below ground so far.

^ I would assume that one would make the connection to the after effects of oil to our air and environment, but i guess i was just asking for too much comprehension.

If you were talking about the "effects of oil on our air and environment," I guess you shouldn't have added: "now we can go and screw it deep below."

People and their oil .
They're worse than those crackheads that scamper around with their faces down scanning the sidewalk in hopes someone might have dropped some crack.

Maybe the petroleum industry has wrecked environments in some parts of the world but not here in Alberta.
Tell me an occasion in Alberta where zones below the ground have been adversely affected by drilling. I am sure you are referring to groundwater contamination which would be the most important thing adeversly impacted oil or gas drilling.
There are roughly 350,000 wells drilled in Alberta and pretty much zero impact to groundwater. There are however many cases of farmers who allow runoff of sewage (from things such as hog farms) to flow into aquifers which have caused much more actual problems.
I am all for the elimination of SUv's and the such but to say the petroleum industry has raped this province is absolutely wrong. Which I assume you were not meaning. The actual drilling is quite harmless but the burning of these fuels is quite another matter that I know much less about.
|
I don't know about the drilling, but getting oil from the tar sands wreaks a lot of environmental havoc.

I read an interesting thing the other day about how sunlight has been decreased by a good margin on our fair planet due to that all the pollution in the air. I believe the word "particulate" was used, though I'm certainly no scientist.
It was a bit of a doomsday scenario in that global warming would be a lot worse if some of that pollution wasn't blocking the sun's rays and as we move to cleaner fuels, the same/more carbon dioxide is produced but the benefits of smoke and ashes and other more visible crap aren't pumped out then we get more sunlight and that heats things up a little more, or a lot more.
EDIT: Here's The Link!

Has anyone ever heard of "PeakOil". Supposedly some huge crisis. I don't by it.
Oil will run out one day, and we'll probably be more screwed than anyone realizes. Oil isn't just for heating and running cars, it actually runs a lot of other stuff, like factories that help produce food and other things necessary for our survival.
About sunlight decreasing, I guess that's not too bad, because I heard a few years ago that global warming was still becoming an increasingly large problem.

Larry Rykman somehow got himself behind one of these deep deep drilling pie in the sky ideas. I think he was promoting a local company and was trying to raise cash for it. I don't know the whole deal but it turned out to be a dud investment.
Even if oil is produced from inorganic matter in the center of the earth it isn't replacing itself fast enough.
And oil will not run out, oil may become uneconomical but it will never run out, and this won't happen overnight despite what many fear-mongers will tell you.

I remember the episode of The Transformers where Megatron drilled to the Earth's core for energy and it caused the whole planet to start collapsing!

As the leading article mentioned, the vast majority of earth scientists, including myself, who have given some thought to commercial oil and gas being generated from deeper parts of the earth, find the idea quite far-fetched. When Rykman was drilling his well in the crystalline basement (Precambrian) up north, I managed to talk a janitor out of sinking part of his savings into the scheme.
I agree that we will never completely run out of oil, however I believe it will some day become uneconomic to produce. One article, which I thought was helpful in understanding how it may eventually become uneconomic, used the following reasoning:
When oil first started being used as an important source of energy, about 150 years ago, it took one barrel of oil equivalent to find 100 barrels of oil. With time this number has come down to the present, where it takes about one barrel to find 10 barrels. When eventually it takes one barrel to find close to one barrel or less, then oil will obviously become uneconomical as an energy commodity. Just when that will happen is the big question.
