Default U.S. and Russian satellites collide.

Well for any of those that have ever wondered, like I, why two of the thousands of satellites buzzing around the earth never end up crashing into each other, it has finally happened.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/12/u...ef=mpstoryview

Now the question is, what next? Will the debris from this collision pose a threat to other satellites? Scientists have not been able to pin point the trajectory of the debris clouds as of yet, but are confident that they should pose no risk. They are most concerned about the ISS right now, (do they use that for anything yet anyway?) but believe it should be ok.

Apparently the 5th time 2 objects have collided in orbit from another site i read.

Heres a cool gif tracking the 2 objects before collision. Really shows how unlikely it is that anything up there collides. As much stuff as there is the volume of space up there is massive in comparison.

Yeah other objects have collided before but they are usually rocket boosters and scraps and stuff. This was the first time it was satellites I believe.

So which side did the policeman satelite side with? Was their any DUO (Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol in Orbit.)? I wonder how the insurance companies are going to work this out?

The kinetic energy from these two colliding was the same as 5 tons of TNT!

BANG!

Actually I guess since its a vacuum it'd be:

....!

Haha yeah, it always bugs me in space movies when you can hear the explosions... I often start yelling at the screen.

Movies would be kind of lame without loud explosions in space though, so I forgive them.

But done properly it can really add dramatic effect to the movie, or make it really creepy. In space, no one can hear you scream, and all that!

Was this the 3-C-P-1? What is Melonville watching now? I demand answers to these questions.
