Default Blockbuster video - Late fees on games are back - NOOO!!!

Just spreading the word from other sites.

Quote:
Before this change, it was $10 to rent for a week, pay extra $1.84 restocking fee and you can keep it up to 30 days. Yes I did this many times, but I guess too many people were doing this and it was taking the stores ages to make a profit off their games.

So new policy as of Mon Feb 2. 2009.

$8.99 per game rental (down $1) - 7 days, $1/day over. Keep it for 7 days, you get nailed with $1.84 restocking fee plus the $7 late fees. On the 8th day, your account gets billed for the full amount of the game(s)

The max time you can keep a rental now at BB is 2 weeks - cost $17.84 with restocking fee and then add tax on top.

Now with the change, its almost better to just buy the damn game and resell.

I don't know what there is to complain about 30 days for $12 was ridiculous in the first place. If you are going to keep a game that long...BUY IT!

Good for Blockbuster maybe stuff will actually be in stock from now on.

When was I complaining? Its called exxageration. I dont blame BBV for doing this, but the $12 1 month game rents werre good while it lasted.

I was not saying you were complaining, but it seems like the person you quoted was complaining he now had to buy their games.

Agreed. For the few times I am late with a movie, I would rather pay that to be able to know that they actually have stock.

At the price of game rentals these days, it's better to just buy them anyways. Seriously, ten bucks? You can BUY a lot of used games for that price or a little bit more.

Do some research and buy stuff you'll like and play for a long time VS. wasting money on rentals.

They don't unfortunately (if I'm wrong please let me know). I know that zip.ca had a poll on their site asking if they should add games to their catalog, but I never heard much else out of them.

It's a shame that some ass-hat over at blockbuster decided to improperly scan a game I returned to them and then charge me $65 ... and then send the issue to a collection agency without so much as a phone call. Since then Blockbuster has been completely dead to me an I happy to say they haven't seen a dime of my money in over a year. I worked it out once, their $65 BS penalty ends up costing them about $500 of my yearly income that I now take elsewhere.

I'm sad to see game late fees return only because it will help their business in the long run. I wanted that company bankrupt.

I use Canflix which is based out of Calgary. $22 a month I pay for 3 games/movies out at a time. The only thing is their stock of quality games/movies isnt that high so I'm running out of selections to pick that are not already rented out.

Thankfully this is not a company wide deal. I inquired about this when I went to rent a game at Blockbuster this week. There is no change in their late policy here, the guy said it was only certain markets. He then basically begged that I don't keep the game for a month. We'll see.

And by doing so you give them a reason to change the rules for your market.

It's cool, it was just Afro Samurai. Awesome game but it only took like 7 hours to beat it. I'll take it back in time so I'm not the reason they change things here.

I discovered this the hard way last month. Rented NHL '09(I own it now, I didnt then) and because of the no late fee thing, I knew I had a month so I just kept it all month(I didnt realize they had changed this). Finally returned it, and the next week I went to rent a movie, only to discover I apparently owed $60 for the game, as they just made me buy it. I raised a stink with the guy and told him I returned it awhile ago and they've messed up, and amazingly he bought it and just cleared the entire charge, I didnt even have to pay a late fee. Beautiful.

If you want a service like gamefly for canada you could give www.gameaccess.ca a shot. I tried them out and even though they are based out of Montreal the games arrived pretty fast. Good luck getting any new games without paying extra fees for reserving games. Priced really decent.

*Edit*

After looking at www.canflix.com as suggested above they seem to have a better deal, I may have to check them out.

Frankly I'm shocked that they were foolish enough to even try this in the first place. How could they think this wouldn't end with people holding onto games for whole months? Perhaps they thought the number of people that held them too long and were forced to buy the games would cover the costs.

The "no late fee" promotion was a big-time failure for Blockbuster, IMO. I very rarely rent from them anymore because they never have the films/games I want in stock.

The guy responsible for implementing this was very publicly fired about 2 years ago now... Damage is done though. Interesting tidbit though, in Australia they never did the promotion at all.. It seems like they already knew it was a bad idea before rolling it out down here.
