Depending on what you want...average is around a grand from what i've seen. Talented folk like Neeper are a tad bit more

Thats about what we've seen while looking so far. It also depends on how long you want the photographer for. If you want them from first thing in the morning to the end of the wedding, it'll cost more then having one for a couple hours during the wedding and the pictures afterwards

average one can be 2-3 grand.
good one 4-6 grand
they are expensive. anything with a "wedding" label on it is expensive. cake = $200..."wedding" cake = $1000. same with photographers, venues, invitations.
we spent about $30,000 on our wedding in November 2007
our photographer was $4000, he now charges $5000+
good luck and congratulations.

I got a deal on wedding photography, all I got was the proofs, then he filed bankruptcy and never sent me any of the albums I paid for. The pictures were way amateur. Your pictures are the only tangible thing from your wedding that lasts more than a day. Spend the money there, it really counts. If I had to get a boom box instead of a DJ or a band, buy a cheaper wedding dress, I would in order to put that money toward high quality pictures of that day.

We are using Neeper for our wedding. If he is in your price range I really recommend him.

We'll we're looking to keep it to a minimum for a decent photographer. I was hoping sub-$1000 was plausible, but not sure anymore.
What if we're just looking for good pics of ceremony and after; and no fancy pants albums (got friend able ot do for us).

I decided that although pictures are really nice, for $2000+ dollars, we could put the money towards something more useful, and instead went all out on our honeymoon. I was happy with my decision. 3 friends/family members had SLR cameras, and just took photos all day, and gave them to us after. We got really good photos (2000 plus, and i printed them ALL at costco, for $250). I figured I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on photos, for them to sit in an album forever. I still got my few good shots that I have framed and displayed, and thats good enough for me! Just another option....

We fell into the photos were important to us camp. When we were looking 3 years ago, we were focused on studios that do photojournalism shots. Typical package for all day coverage and ownership of negatives was around $3500. Calgary is wedding crazy though, so that cost has probably doubled since we booked...

$30G's? Holy Crap...
We got married in Mexico got a mexican photgrapher to do the pictures (very nice BTW.. not NEEPER quality but good nonetheless) and came back and had a Dance here and I dont think it cost us much over 12,000
And our reception was for about 130 people.

My wedding, including all clothing, food, and pictures was < $2000.
I wish we had got someone better to do the pictures though. Ours was a friend of a friend who had some experience. It wasn't terrible, but we certainly got what we paid for.

okay to clear it up, yes it was about $30,000
15K for the venue, 4K for photographer. then there was tux rental, dresses, party favours, ceremony, dj....crap added up to about $30,000. had about 150+ people.
most venues we looked at started at $20K, not including food.
and we did not skimp on the photographer. get a good one like others have said here.
of course, i would have rather purchased my dream car instead....just do not tell my wife that.

Do photographers even offer packages without albums? ie a few hours shooting and then just digital files

depends on the photographer. most will give you all the digital files (we have over 2000 photos) some will touch up a few and print them out on photo paper (200).
some will offer albums, but generally at an additional cost. this would include touching up and page layouts.
we got a photo journalist who now does weddings. i am sure there are places were they offer a full day of service and included albums for a fair price. these places are a lot cheaper because they charge you by the album. generally, you do not get all the files...just the ones you buy for the book.
hope that helps.
