Default How do I search for a Word doc?

I have Vista. Yeah, I know.

When I go to the search function through the tab on the bottom left of my screen, if I type in some key words from the document it searches the Internet. How do I search for a specific Word document on my hard drive but not the Internet?

With Vista you have to use your internet search function to access your hard drive.

I'm totally making that up.

Are you searching for words within the document or just the filename of the document?

Can you open up "Computer", right click on your C drive and do a search from there? (I don't have Vista.)

Then search for *.doc or *.docx

I can't find it by file name so am searching for key words. I have a hard copy of the document so key words are easy to do. I must have misfiled it, otherwise finding it by file name would be easy.

Click your start button, in the box that says "Start search" type the text and hit enter. I am pretty sure it will check text inside documents, however it might not do it automatically. If it doesn't, hitting enter will bring up the window with the link to the advanced search which will have the option I am sure of it.

Scroll down to "Advanced Search Pane" (about half-way down). I think that's what you're looking for.

There are basic instructions for various types of searching and indexing tasks within Vista throughout the page.

"Windows Key" + f

Opens the Search dialog. From there you can do a whole bunch of fancy things.

if you're looking for a word doc on the internet google:

filetype:doc (or xls, pdf, ppt, xml) AND search term

I've found alot of interesting spreadsheets this way.

If you are looking for text within any file. Type into that box the phrase with double quotes around it.

i.e. "some text in file"
