Default Electrical question

Hey guys, I have an electrical question...

I have a ceiling light that stopped working and after a bit of troubleshooting I checked the voltage at the switch and it is only at 40V. I don't think there is any other outlets on this circuit...any ideas on why the voltage would be 40 instead of 120? And would lower voltage cause the light not to work (I would have guessed that it would have just dimmed the light.).

Any help would be much appreciated.

May be a dumb question, but is there also a dimmer switch in the room? Is the light only controlled by this one switch? What kind of light is it?

How old is your house? Odds are you have a loose connection somewhere, either at the light fixture, at the switch, or at the previous outlet/switch on the circuit. Call an electrician.

Nope, no dimmer switch

it is only controlled by one switch and as far as I know the light is the only load on this circuit

It is a fugly light that takes three 20W bulbs like these

Where are you reading the voltage? That is a low voltage light, so there will be a transformer somewhere that is stepping down the voltage. Are your reading on the input or output side of the transformer. Also, what is the voltage on the bulb.

Also, a breaker rarely has just one outlet or light on it, usually there are 12.
