Does this happen in your office?
I'm just curious as I havn't been in a bigger office before I took this job (100-150 People) Early last year they began to replace our old crappy crt monitors with LCD monitors. When they started replacing them they only brought in enough for maybe half so half got old crappy monitors and half got new LCD. This took about 1 1/2 years and they almost have replaced all the old monitors. Well this week they did the same thing with office chairs bring in maybe enough for half the people and distributed by senority. This time again they won't be replacing the rest for another 1 1/2 years. Oddly enough the stink from this has been here all week and people who didn't get a new chair (Supposed to be better for your back) have been complaining non stop. Is this the common way in an office to upgrade office equipment?

yeah they are fairly uncomfortable. I guess they will be cleaning the old chairs though so they look newer . . . . .

My experience is that often these things do get done in stages. Budgetary restrictions and all that.

I work in an offiice with 12 people... Even we do this... It's called cost control and budgeting. Also, when you're in a market where raises are unlikely, and only so many meaningless promotions can be given, rewarding seniority by giving first priority to replacement equipment is a wise decision to maintain loyalty in your senior staff.

In ours it's done on when people come in. When you arrive you get all new things and the people with more seniority than you tend to complain. It's a bit of an odd system.

Yeah it seems like its due to the budget. I understand the logic behind it but it seems to cause so many ripples. Oh well I guess you can't please everyone.

A recent Office episode involved a debate on whether to spend a budget surplus on a new photocopier or new chairs.

I definitely have the most ghetto desk at my office. Its the odd piece out, everyone else has medium to dark wood desks, mine is verrrry light wood. And its a bit too high, so sometimes when I am typing my arms go numb. I think they felt bad for giving me the crap desk, so they have me a non-matching bookshelf where the shelves aren't deep enough, so everything falls out.
Ah the joys of being the lowly student at the office!

We purchase computers and monitors for the need. Our previous IT manager just bought new stuff if there was a new position (so I got lucky to have had a nice new PC and monitor when I started). However, since our IT manager left we changed things. We keep track of when people got their PCs and if we need a new PC, then we'll get a new PC to the person next in line to get a new PC. The power users get the newer/better PCs and the old machines replace the oldest machines of current users, and/or new users.
We just went through a project where we got funding to buy new PCs and monitors. We gave dual screen monitors to most of our staff, save for one department who couldn't benefit from dual screens as most everybody else could. We swapped around monitors and PCs like crazy. High end users got new computers and mid end users got the PCs formerly belonging to the high end users and the low end users either got PCs belonging to mid end users or kept their PCs but got new monitors.

Similar to my office except one thing....
They don't go by seniority... I've been stuck with this same pleather chair that a cat ripped apart 4 years ago, while new employees are getting brand new real leather ones.

At our office you just need to be lucky enough for your stuff to break, then you get the new stuff. Our office only has about 70 employees, some complain more than others. We work for a small business and the owners are very generous and loyal, so I want to smack the people who complain. If we really need anything we'll get it, but we don't have big corporate dollars to just replace everything all at once. I seem to luck out, there's always reasons popping up that require me to get new stuff. I still have an old chair that sinks overnight though.
