Default Slightly Urgent/Important Question re. AB Healthcare

Okay, I have a friend who lives in Ontario that just dropped me an email. Apparently, she got into a nasty car accident late last night and has some painful whiplash and possibly a concussion. She was throwing up last night etc... I have no idea why she didn't phone the police at the scene etc...

Now, she is an Alberta, living in Ontario for 14 months. She won't go to the doctor, because she doesn't think that ON Health will cover her through AB Health. Last time she went to get something checked on, the doctor wouldn't treat her.

Now, my question is, with the Canada Health Act, doesn't it guarantee universal care to any Canadian anywhere in Canada. Can't she just go into a doctor's office, give them her AB health number and receive treatment?

Yes she can get treatment.. If shes been living there for 14 months she should quit being lazy amd get proper coverage.

Moving back and forth between Manitoba and Alberta I never had an issue even though I may have exceeded the Manitoba coverage by a bit.

I would say she should be covered; especially seeing as she would have been paying for Alberta coverage; same as she would have in Ontario.

All she has to do is call, make an apointment and go in and fill out her info. She is automatically approved being a Canadian Citizen.

Being there for 14 months, this should all have been done a while ago one would think.. I guess not.

If it is a medical emergency and she was taken by ambulance to the hospital then she would have recieved emergency care. 2 wrongs dont make a right I guess. Too bad, hope shes all right. BTW ... is she hot?

Yes. They are not going to turn you away from health care - especially when it sounds serious. Why hasn't she gone to a hospital given what you described?

And I agree to an extent with burn, she should get Ont health care. I think your previous province technically covers you for the first 2 or 3 months, then you are supposed to transition onto the new province. All she had/has to do is phone and explain she has moved to Ontario now and no longer resides in AB. In general, she may consider herself an "Albertan"...but living in another province for 14 months makes her a member of that province. In this case an Ontario-ian (?). So she should have already switched over all her stuff, including health care, drivers license, etc etc.

But she should get treated, especially with the things you are describing!

Yeah, I agree that she should have already gotten ON health. I don't know... she's one of those artist types. The kind that are only competent at art. Otherwise, sort of a dreamer...
