That's an excellent article. Quitting drinking sounds like a hellish task ... good on the author.

That is depressing.
I guess the only solution is to either, not quit or not go cold turkey, or not be an alcoholic in the first place, although thats tough.

I love Cracked...
I don't personally understand what it's like to need alcohol...I'm one of those guys sh*tting on the hood of the cop car...but he has has really given me some insight into what it's like.
This article could really help people understand that it isn't just something you can turn on and off.

The last paragraph of the article does mention that sobriety is better than the downsides of getting sober.
I can't believe you can drink enough that when you stop you begin to emit a smell.

Lol. Every alcoholic tries to taper their drinking at one point or another. Poor advice.

There's no question that the guy was a serious drinker, he was warned by his doctor that his liver was shutting down and basically dying before he turned 4 years old.
this wasn't a guy that just drank heavy when he partied, he needed to be buzzed to go to sleep every night.
I've been there, but I didn't make a career out of it, I was a very heavy drinker for a relatively short period of time (from 18 to 30). I managed to stop drinking, but every once in a while I'll have a beer or a scotch, but I have the ability to stop now. I don't think I was ever a true alcoholic though.
I wasn't anywhere near this guy, but he's right about the smell for the first day or two, and he's espcially around the night mares which were so vivid and real that I'd be chasing phantoms around the house when I work up.
That column is pretty well his confessional, and good for him.

I work with an alchoholic. He doesn't think we realise, but its pretty easy to figure out. He has all the symptoms to go along as well and they start to show if he can't afford beer for 2 or 3 days.
Smells like absolute garbage. To the point that people won't ride anywhere with him. He is also mind numbingly stupid and must be talked through instructions step-by-step even though he has been doing this job for 6 years now.

Like you CC I hit the wall when I was 30. I was not an alchoholic, since I didn't crave booze, I just liked to go real hard when I drank. Like it was some sort of challenge.
I was friends with a guy that worked as a bartender at the Palace. He used to bring 26's of Wild Turkey in for me since that was my elixir of choice, and they didn't stock it. One night I was there doing shots and drinking the odd beer in between for about an 2 hours. I went up to get another shot, and he said '"Trev, I'm out, you drank the whole f'n bottle, get help." The scary part was I was coherent and standing.
Definitely took inventory that night and decided to give it up. I felt like I'd aged 10 years in the span of a few. I didn't drink a drop until a couple years ago, and now I just have the odd glass of wine or a beer here or there.
