So I'm Moving Back to Calgary...
I've been sitting on this info for a while now, and finally realized that since it's highly likely that no-one cares anyway, I might just as well spill the beans! But yeah, after too many years to count in Iowa, and around 2 years on the East coast, my family and I are coming back to Calgary this summer, for a variety of reasons.
In some ways, it's a complicated decision. I have a good job in Boston, though it's too much work and too little money, and Boston's a great town. But in the end, it was just too far away from family and friends, and with a toddler in the mix we decided it wasn't fair to raise her so far from her grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. Not to mention the skyrocketing cost of healthcare around here, and the fact that Boston is even more expensive than Calgary if you can believe it.
So I'll need to find the following things in Calgary, a city I haven't lived in since 1998:
1. A rec league that is a good fit for a competitive, but frankly not very good hockey player.
2. A low-stakes, relaxed home poker game.
3. A watering-hole of some sort to which I can make a periodic pilgrimage.
4. A job.
5. A place to live.
Thoughts are appreciated!

Well, I don't do windows or floors......
In all seriousness, that's a complicated question. At the moment I'm an adjunct prof. at UMass-Boston and at Babson College in Wellesley, but the academic life has lost some of its luster over the years.
So I'm a teacher by trade, a writer by choice and hoping to find something satisfactory in the Fall that will pay the bills and keep the horses of the apocalypse at bay. I may look for more adjunct work in the short term, but it's unlikely I can be compensated for that as well as I am in Boston, where the money's actually pretty good.

Resolved: never to use the expression "watering hole" in an ambiguous context again. Yikes.

I think the entire CP community should reside in Calgary. We should just take over.

Well, I didn't change it after I left Iowa for Philly or when I moved to Boston. And, well.... "Calgary Flames Fan" just doesn't have that same ring now, does it?

Calgary is god's country as far as I'm concerned. Every Christmas for 10 years I've asked myself "why don't I live here?" Now I will. Even though there's some uncertainty surrounding this, I'm pretty happy about it.

CP poker meets. I nominate someone with a big house to host it.

My face is a bum!

You're picking a great time to move. You've been making US$, our housing market might even be worse off than Boston's, and the Flames are looking great. Get here before spring.

The Herald could use some more writers....
Have you looked into journalism? Most analysts on CNN don't have the knowledge you do about US politics.

It sounds like you're not too interested in academia anymore but I would still keep the UofC and Mount Royal in mind (Maybe even UofL?). Most institutions have an unofficial hiring freeze right now due to the economy but positions keep popping up in most areas. What area do you teach anyway?
