Default Xbox 360's E74 error

Just curious is anyone has gotten this error on their 360. This is the first I've heard of this.

I'm always up for a good conspiracy theory. LOL

A conspiracy theory making the rounds speculates Microsoft may have changed the system diagnostics test to report Red Ring of Death error as E74 instead to save money. For errors reported as E74, it would force customers to pay $100 for the repair if the error occurs later than 12 months after purchase. The E74 error is not covered under the 3-year extended warranty set in place for the Red Ring of Death malfunction. Joystiq points out that this theory is unlikely because survey respondents are still reporting Red Ring of Death errors after the launch of the New Xbox Experience.

I have only used my xbox 3 or 4 times since the update so I hope its not related

I've got this error since I've had my xbox 360, however it's only happen when starting up and it always works after I turn it off. I've had the 360 before it's released for sale and I've never had to send it in for repair.

I had this error just before my 1 year warranty expired. It has something to do with the graphics chip. Try ensuring all cables are securely attached and then trying to boot the machine with all memory units and hard drives removed. If you still have the error, you're looking at sending your 360 to MS for repairs.

Wish they would do the same for the Disc Read Error. I'm on my second replacement and both of my replacements have suffered from it. I just checked my warranty too and it looks like it's expired so I either have to pay Microsoft $100 to get it fixed or try and fix it myself.

I've been getting this error since the patch update for NHL09. I can't go through one game without the console making funny noises, and then the disc error pops up.

I'm gonna call tomorrow and see if there's some type of fix.

I've tried pretty much every fix I could find online that doesnt require you to open it up. The only one I've seen to have any luck with is the sticking postcard paper into a closed disc tray with the game you want to play inside and rubbing it left to right. But it doesnt always work and it's only a temporary fix.

If I didnt have 24 games I'd probably say screw it and just stick with my PS3 but I've invested too much money into it. And I wont be paying Microsoft $100 to fix something that should have been fixed long ago.

Stupid Microsoft. I got a red ring of death, phoned em up, it was out of warranty and $150.00 to send it in to get fixed.

For another 50 I'm just going to buy a new generation 4 xbox pro.

For a few months now, Xbox 360 users have been quietly venting about a "new" hardware fault with the console, where instead of displaying three red rings, machines would show an "E74" error.

Just because it didn't flash the iconic red rings, though, doesn't mean it wasn't bad! If you got it, your console would display a system error warning (pictured above), and it meant your machine was fried. Which is probably why Microsoft have decided to issue an extended warranty for the fault, similar to the one offered to red ring sufferers.

While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays "E74" on their screen. After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.

That's the, uh, "good" news. The better news? If your machine suffered from an E74 previously, and you had to pay for repairs, Microsoft will refund you the amount some time over the next 4-12 weeks.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water! leave your 360 alone without fear of it falling over and dying!

Apologies for the semi-necro bump.

I just got this message today. Doing the reboot with nothing attached or trying different AV cables did not work, so I'm now awaiting my shipping label to send this $350 piece of shoddy hardware back to them. Only had the thing 17 months too.

Seems like as they come out with newer and better consoles, they get worse at keeping them working for a long time. I still have my old NES and SNES (22 years and 18 years respectively) and those things STILL work. But, new ones can't even last 2 years? What a joke.

Had that damn Disc Read error on four different PS2s as well.

Anyway, if you have sent it in for repairs, how long did it take to get back?

The disc read error is the reason I barely ever play my 360. I have a model that is 3-4 years old and some games (NHL 08) would constantly freeze in certain game modes.

It's unacceptable really, how their system is almost unplayable, due to errors on their end. I remember playing Oblivion on 360, and you could hear the disc drive stop spinning so you would have to frantically try and save before the dirty disc error message came up.

It took about a couple weeks to ship it there and for them to send it back. I live in a rural area though.

As far as the disc read error that I had goes I decided to open up my 360 after the warranty expired and clean the inside of the DVD drive and I havent had one problem with it reading a disc since.
