Default Vinyl!!

My wife surprised me with a turntable and some of my fave records for my birthday last week, and I am blown away by the sound quality. Any other CPers into records? If so, where do you get them around Calgary or online?

I second Recordland, that used to be one of my favorite places to go vinyl shopping hung over on the weekends, huge selection of old records, might take a while to find what you want though. On the same topic sort of...any Winnipeggers know of a good place out here to buy vinyl? I havent really been out shopping much since I've been here.

Make sure everyone you know knows you collect records. That way, when they are moving or their grandma dies or whatever and they have a bunch of records that are useless to them, they'll give them to you.

You'll get a lot of junk, but some winners.

That Ogden flea market (the name escapes me) has a couple people shilling old records. Haggle.

Garage sales give 'em away for pennies. Mostly junk, but again, the odd winner.

Hot Wax in Kensington sells vinyl. I think Megatunes has a small section as well.

You needz a pair of techz home sauce.

Sl12000 Technics are amazing. I wish I had very large amounts of money. You don't actually need one though unless you want to start DJing as opposed to just listening.
Welcome to the club of awesome people.

A guy I know goes to garage sales, and doesn't search through them before buying, he just offers to buy the whole lot from them, then sorts through them when he gets home. He gets pretty good deals because he offers to take the whole lot - the garage salers don't have to worry about the leftover ones. He's got a pretty good collection. He's given us some of his duplicates - though I need a record player to play them on.

I had to check who started the thread, at first glace I figured it was Fotze bragging about his new Christmas underwear...

My brother has a ton records (600+) , he even got one of those players that let you record Vinyl straight to CD so he can listen to them in the car. My old player lost it's last needle years ago and I've lost touch with records.

Still have a couple of boxes of old vinyl, haven't had a turntable in almost 20 years. Dad has a really nice one, worth in the neighbourhood of $5,000. Nothing beats the sound on vinyl.

That's a good idea. If you are a real dork, and I qualify, the worst records out there can have some kitsch value to boot.

I just stumbled across a little blurb on the front page of the business section of the Herald.

No link, but the "headline" reads "Vinyl Record sales double" then goes on to explain that 1.88 million records were sold in the States last year, up from 990,000 the year before. This benefits independent record stores, because they sell 2/3rds of all the vinyl. CD sales fell 20% last year while digital album sales rose 32% to 66 million.

I used to have a collection of over 300 vinyl records in mint condition. Found a collector last year who took them off my hands for a handsome sum.

I wonder if he got mine. I had a great collection of limited addition and rare records at my parents house here in Calgary. One was even worth $200-$400.

My parents sold the whole collection for $10 in a garage sale without asking me.

I'm a vinyl junkie too. I still have about 1100 of them that I've collected since I was a tween. Some of them are worth a ton, like yours Winsor. Audiophile editions, direct-to-disc pressings, etc.

If anyone sold them without my asking, I'd have thoughts of murdering them in their sleep.

Years ago when my sister or I would fly home, the car we got to use was the old station wagon- complete with the AM radio/ 8 Track stereo. (That's right; no FM.)

Then I was at some flea market and found a bunch of good 8-tracks. Rush, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, etc. They weren't cheap- a few bucks each, but I didn't care. My sister was also happy when I told her the news.

A few months later she calls me from my parent's house; she has looked in the car and cannot find the "new" 8 Tracks anywhere. I told her that they should all be in the centre console. At that point my mom asked what she was looking for, and that's when we found out my mom had sold them all in their latest garage sale, and got 25¢ for the lot of them.

Why are parents always ######ed that way??? I swear, my entire childhood is just a series of traumatizing moments realizing my parents had sold or thrown away all my most prized and sentimental possesions.

Did they grow up in another era where throwing everything away or trying to pawn off things in garage sales to keep your house empty was conditioned into their minds or something? Man, this thread makes me really angry thinking about all that stuff now.

Why do mothers have this urge to constantly throw away or sell their children's most beloved possessions?
