D-Link does DNS stupid
I've got a D-Link DIR-615 that I just bought from Future Shop and the only way I can get internet access to work is to manually specify the primary DNS server to the one that I can read off of the router management page (192.168.0.1).
That's fine and dandy for my computer's, but I can't seem to make it work with the iPhone.
Any suggestions on how to make the router suck less or should I just return it?

That's weird.. is DNS Relay turned on or off?
Sounds like it's off, but the router is still giving out its own IP address as the DNS server to devices requesting an IP address.
You need to either turn DNS relay on, or set the DNS servers that the router gives out with IP addresses to the DNS server the ISP gives.

I just bought that same router; also from FS. My g/f's iPod Touch (1st gen if that matters) works fine with it right out of the box.
Only thing I did was I have my network "secured" by using MAC address filtering.
I also did not run the setup CD that came with the router. Not sure if any of that info helps you, but my guess is there is something up with that router- maybe want to exchange it?

I dunno man. I had a 615 myself, and it worked fine with my iPhone, Macbook Pro and Apple TV... as well as my HP laptop, hardwired iMac and wireless PS3.
No seekrit mojo involved imo.

Perhaps attempt a firmware update? This could be a bug. Not really familiar with D-Link products, although we've used a couple of their routers at work. They seem okay, but I'm a Cisco/Linksys guy myself now, after years of working with cheap generic stuff at home (I'm a cheapskate); the Linksys stuff seems rock-solid and worth the extra couple of bucks.

Set your computer back to DHCP, then run the following commands from a command window.
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /all
On the last command, what does it show under "DHCP server" and "DNS server".

I had to disable MAC address filtering to get it to work on my first gen. iTouch and the rest of my home network.
I hate D-Link products. Never again.

I'm the same way, I only buy Linksys because its made by Cisco. I have had nothing but problems with D-Link.

D-Link is awful.
Any router that doesn't let me reserve IP addresses for specific computers (for ease with port forwarding) isn't worth the money.

You guys are blaming D-Link for your inability to configure a router properly.
D-Link lets you reserve static IPs for specific computers.
D-Link lets you use MAC address filtering to add your iPod Touch or any other network device. Just as Linksys does, but since it's a different brand, the instructions will be a bit different in the web-based configuration page.
But I will agree with you that Linksys is a more robust product.

Actually no, only 3 D-link products allow static ip reservation.
Every D-Link product, router or NIC, that I have owned either died fast, didnt work out of the box, or was sublimely inferior to a similar Linksys product. Theres a reason Cisco is tops in routing hardware worldwide, while D-Link can barely carve out their "we're cheaper!" home unit niche.

I haven't had much problem with D-Link, and the router I have right now is a D-Link that does traffic shaping so I can game while leaving torrents running. Works quite well. Also allows static IP reservation and has very good options for port forwarding and such.
Seems to hate my PS3 though.
But I'm usually a Linksys guy as well, but my opinion of them went backwards when Cisco bought them, I'm not a big Cisco fan either.
D-Link has horrible support, never had to work with Linksys support.

i did tons of research and finally decided on the linksys 610 - it is simultaneous dual band wireless which lets me assign the channels based upon what i need the bandwidth for.
personally, i would google the issue and if you can't find the resolution that you need...i would go with a different model. The reason that i say this is because i was having terrible redirection issues with my old router...and by changing routers this issue disappeared for me.

Obligatory I use Dlink -- 3 routers over 6 years. Had one problem with my first Wireless B model where it would reboot to search for a non busy channel when it encountered interference from agressive cordless phones. A firmware update fixed that.
Never bought a Linksys router simply because they are equivalent to the Dlink products but cost 25-30% more.
How often is this debate going to rage on this forum? There are 4-5 different threads arguing whether Dlink or Linksys routers are better...

As long as there are MS/Apple threads
As long as there are PS3/XBox360 threads
As long as there are [insert any recurring argument between essentially the same products made my differnt manufacturers] threads
Strange thing is, with routers there are probably a bajillion (give or take one or two) makes and models, and I strongly doubt one maker is totally competent or the other it totally incompetent.
Thats said, I'm using a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 with Hyperwrt2.1b1 & Thibor 15c firmware. Seems to work well, so I have no reason to change.

I have a question that might be on topic in this thread.
First off, I am dumb. I don't understand a lot of this stuff. I'm not totally inept in this area, but it's not my forte.
I have a wireless home network which consists of two PC's and my son's xbox 360. The internet connection is from my cable. So I got the Linksys router to set this up about a year ago, and everything worked fine for several months.
Then I had a service interruption one day and now only the PC that is connected directly to the router has an internet connection. HOWEVER, the other computer has an 'excellent connection' to the wireless router (the home network).
WTF?
One theory I have is that my cable signal is too weak to support the network. It doesn't seem like a flawless theory though.
Any ideas?
Should add that I have run the connection and network setup wizards multiple times to no avail.

The "excellent connection" likely refers only to the radio strength. You can have good radio signal to the router but not, for whatever reason, be granted access to the network. Likely something is messed up on the security and encryption front. Go through the wireless setup again on both your router and your Xbox.

Yeah yeah... psst... Mac's are totally better.
As far as I've heard, the Linksys WRT54G with one of the opensource firmware upgrades is the single best home router solution out there. I just stay away because it's a Wireless G unit, and that just seems... ghetto.

How would I turn DNS relay on? I didn't seem to find any information on it when I was logged into the admin page on the router.
I'm going to try re-flashing the firmware, and if that doesn't work, then I'm taking it back.
