Default iTunes all f'd up...

I have no idea what I did to my itunes, but more than half my songs are giving me a message that it could not locate file and would I like to look for it. WTF? I haven't moved any files around and alot of songs still work. That, and my ipod still plays all songs correctly. Just my itunes on the computer is screwey. Anybody have this happen? I already got punchy with my desk and there was two casualties. My drawers got dislodged from the desk when I pounded my fist upon it and a beer bounced up and fell over as well. The carnage needs to stop here. Somebody please tell me what the fudge is wrong with my itunes before more beers are lost.

Try File>Library>Consolidate Library.

If the music is on your drive somewhere it will find it and move it into your iTunes folder.

Trying that right now... Though I still don't understand why my music went from working fine to needing 'consolidation'. Hopefully it works and I'll just chalk this up to some kind of disagreement between windows and apple.

Did you 'hide file or folders'? If you did, you must unhide them, then Itunes will find the folder.

One possible situation may have be that the missing songs were deleted or moved, which would cause iTunes to not know where they went. Best way to check on this is to find one of the songs that iTunes can't find anymore, right click on the song and select "Show in Windows Explorer". The file location can also be found by right clicking and selecting "Get Info" -- it's listed at the bottom of the Summary tab.

When you add files to your library, all iTunes does is create a short cut to that file in the "Media Library". It does not copy it to a single directory. It's important to understand that iTunes merely catalogues your music, rather then manages it.

That said, you can change that. In iTunes preferences, under the "Advanced" tab there are two options that just about everyone should have checked (by default, they are not). They are "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder...".

This is hilarious. I've done everything you guys have suggested (thanks, BTW) and still, most of my songs don't work, plus, now I have copies of all my songs - inside itunes. I think this is the final kick in the pants for me. I really need to organize my music once and for all. I might as well do that, then empty itunes and reload it all.

I think I actually did move the folder one night when I was a few beers in. Went on some kind of computer organizing spree and cleaned up a bunch of old files and stuff. But regardless, I went into the advanced tab and gave the computer directions to the folder and the stupid SOB still wont play the songs. Fricken annoying. At least the songs all work fine on my ipod. And that's what's important.......

Thanks anyway, those who helped..

Speaking of itunes problems, mine is all pink (ie colors all distorted/changed).

It's really odd, and I don't recall when it happened, I think I just loaded it once and it was like that, and has been like that since.

Any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind! Turns out an itunes update decided my computer should be on 16-bit. Problem solved.
