Default Christmas Traditions

Well I just finished watching the first of the two Home Alone movies (I refuse to acknowledge any other sequels), which is something I try to do every Christmas and I was wondering what everyone else does.

Which movies do you watch? Any CDs you put on? What does your family do on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

I usually try to watch the Home Alone movies and one of the many versions of A Christmas Carol. When I was younger we used to go to my grandpa's house on Christmas Eve (which was also his birthday) and decorate his tree, then we'd go home and get to open one present before we went to sleep.

my first "xmas" tradition is to never write "xmas", and always call it Christmas, despite being a nonbeliever, because being PC is for fruity tree hugging liberal ######bags

Actually a tradition I had up until they put in the TNG cast was to get together with a few of my nerd friends and watch all of the Star Trek movies back to back to back etc. Sadly we all drifted apart with work, families and such, however I found a couple of them on facebook and one of them suggested we try it again this year, so we might revive it.

It was more Egg Nog and rum induced laziness, but I fixed it just for you.

Large metal pole. Feats of stength.

For some reason I always end up watching Die hard around Christmas.

My post was beer, pizza, and Flames-losing induced buttholishness, just because

But glad you changed it, for some reason 'xmas' and 'the holidays' bug the hell out of me. Maybe calling it Christmas is actually a tradition passed down by my parents.

Or maybe I'm just a lonely, bitter old man lashing out at anything I can find

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

oh, and I'm bored as well as being half cut

Watching It's a Wonderful Life and the old Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim on Christmas Eve. Baking shortbread cookies and decorating them with sprinkles and coloured sugar.
Coffee with Baileys on Christmas morning.
Christmas night, when the kitchen is all cleaned up, just relaxing with a glass of wine and watching one of our new movies, or playing a board game and just feeling really happy that the day went well and my kids are happy.

Lots of appy's on Christmas Eve, get up really really early Christmas morning, open presents, eat stuffed french toast, then go back to bed for a couple of hours. No special dinner, just eat all the leftovers from the night before. Shopping early boxing day.

For a Christmas flick, nothing beats Christmas Vacation, with Chevy Chase.

We make popcorn and cocoa and watch at least one of It's a Wonderful Life, Scrooged, Christmas Vacation or Home Alone I or II.

Most played Christmas CD is Mariah Carey's CD from about 15 years ago.

I still can't understand how those parents forgot Mccauley not once, but three times! What kind of parenting is that?!

Anyways generally we go to my dad's parents Christmas Eve, have a potluck where everybody brings the same thing they always bring, and then open presents. Christmas morning we get up pretty much whenever (although it's the one day my little brother, who is up at 7 every other day of the year, decides to sleep in) and open presents, then head to my mom's parents for Christmas Day, which includes some solid Ukey food and more presents. Then all the guys go watch hockey in the living room while the girls all go play Canasta for 8 hours. Not even kidding. That game takes forever.

We have fondue on Christmas eve every year and on the way home we drive around the neighborhoods and check out the lights.
The one movie I have to watch is National Lampoons Christmas.
CD's I listen to are my celtic Christmas CD, reminds me of home, sometimes to much.

Usually:
Christams Eve: a case of beer and "It's a Wonderful Life"
Christmas Day: Baileys and Coffee with presents
Christmas Day Eve: Rye and Coke with Turkey

I don't know what I'm going to do this year

Getting together with family, friends & neighbours, drinking Rusty Nails and listening to The Chieftains Christmas album. And lots of Christmas lights on the house and around the yard. Homemade baking (almond bark, nuts 'n bolts, a couple zillion different kinds of cookies, rum balls, pecan pie), Quality Street chocolates, cranberry jelly salad and enough turkey to bloat a colony of pilgrims. Rinse and repeat for New Years.

For music this discussion begins and ends with Boney M. Up until a few days ago I didn't even know they did anything other than their Christmas album.

Lots of Christmas lights on the house for the neighbour's enjoyment and in the back yard for our enjoyment. Mini-lights and Christmas decorations scattered throughout our house including 2 Christmas trees (one upstairs and one downstairs).

I love going for a nice long winter walk through the woods on either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Used to do it by myself with the dog, but now that I have a family of my own and no dog it is a family affair.

I tend to eat A LOT and drink a lot of wine and beer over the holidays...although that has kind of become the norm lately.

I also take 1-2 weeks off work each year and stay up late watching as many movies as I can.

I think that Christmas in the Captain's home can best be described in song

It was christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, wont see another one
And then he sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
Ive got a feeling
This years for me and you
So happy christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

Theyve got cars big as bars
Theyve got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
Its no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold christmas eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of new york city
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the nypd choir
Were singing galway bay
And the bells were ringing out
For christmas day

Youre a bum
Youre a punk
Youre an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy
Happy christmas your arse
I pray God its our last

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Cant make it all alone
Ive built my dreams around you

And the video for illiterates out there
