Do they still do this a lot during the winter? I'm one of the "suck it up and pay the ticket" types, but that seems a little unreasonable especially in weather like this.

Are they for sure now? They announced they had intent back in the spring/summer but then said they weren't going to do it for some time and they'd be announcing when they do. I hope not. That's just brutal.

Been hearing it on QR all day. The CTV news just reported it as well. I googled but didn't come up with a good link.
Edit* but it's pretty much confirmed. CTV interviewed Ric McIver and he was bitching as usual (but I agree with him).

Didn't someone mention that these redlight cameras cause more accidents because people are slamming on the brakes rather than going through a yellow out of fear of a ticket?

It's on CBC.ca. I don't think it'll be bad since they'll likely remained marked with signs. A person paying attention should notice it in time.

Yes it's official. It'll start in the new year with a 3 month grace period.

The cameras will snap shots of speeders, whether they are going through green, red or yellow lights, said Paul Oss, a spokesman from the province. Anyone who speeds through a red light could get two tickets for the same action — one for speeding and one for running the red.
"It's possible they could get two infractions, but that will be up to the individual police force to determine that," he said.

How nice of them. Wonder if they will reduce the time for the yellow too, just to make sure they REALLY catch people.

It's all a money grab... obviously. All this will do is increase the number of accidents at these intersections because cars are going to be slamming on their brakes when they realize their is a camera.

Does anyone know if the camera's will use radar or some sort of visual recognition?
I have determined that the red light cameras seem to use motion detection because they never set off the radar detector. One time, I was stopping while the guy beside me cruised through; I saw the flash, but didnt get a radar reading.
Can you even use motion detection to get a speed reading? Or do they have to use radar on these now?
I guess that is what the grace period is for ... time to do a little testing.

They use ground loops embedded in the lanes.

Because of this and the recent massive tax hike I am now facing I will vote against my current alderman "Gord Lowe".
I don't care if it's that Al Noor joker. The people at City Hall have been there to long.

Isn't that kind of like going double down at the Black Jack table for the city? Gotta pay for that urban sprawl somehow I guess.

Easy solution; don't speed or run red lights. I of course would never do either of these and have nothing to worry about, unlike the rest of you lawbreakers up in arms!
I can't believe I was the first to post the holier than solution!!
