Austin has one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, live music scenes in the world.
Since you will be there, I'd suggest San Antonio instead of Big D or Houston. The River Walk and the Alamo can take up an entire day. SA is closer to Austin.

Austin is longhorn central and it sucks... mainly because im a sooner but they do have i think its called 6th ave ....... its just a street filled with bars where all the college kids go to get drunk. SO wear your sunglasses and get down there and check out the hot texas chicks ( the only good thing about the univ of texas is they do have some incredibly gorgeous women)

I'll second this. Downtown San Antonio (well the Riverwalk area anyways) is great.
If you really need to pick between Houston and Dallas... I'd go with Houston. But honestly, they both aren't that special in my opinion.

Is the River Walk really that cool? I was down there in May, my buddy wanted to stop down there so bad. I could have cared less. Wanted to make time driving back to Alberta. Drove right by it.

The most bizarre thing about Austin, Texas is that it is so different than the rest of Texas. Everyone assumes that Texas is a bastion of Christian Conservatives, but Austin is the one area where Liberals feel welcome. The University of Texas is one reason but there is a strong music scene and alot of tech firms.

If you're a foodie you've got to head to Houston. No longer the Fattest city in the US (It lost the title it had held for years to Las Vegas) it remains one of the great food cities of the world.
The combination of Southern US, Mexican and Gulf Coast/Creole influences combine to give the Houston food scene a uniqueness that is rivaled perhaps only by New York.

And they mean it. They have signs at the border. Although it says something more along the lines of "Don't mess with Texas! $200 fine for littering. State Law".

Not sure if you are being serious or not but thats an urban legend:

One thing to watch out for is food portion sizes... they are huge! (Everything is bigger in Texas) So be careful how much you order or you will have lots of leftovers

Austin is awesome. Go to the Ironworks for BBQ. The main drag for music is 6th street - there are places where you'll find 3 or 4 different live music venues crammed into one address. There are more licensed music venues in Austin than there are in all of Canada. The famous ones (Emos, Stubbs) are worth checking out. Drink a Lone Star beer at some point.

So Robbob what kind of things do you like to do? I live in Austin and there are tons of things to do. What kind of music do you like? I can tell you which bars to go to based on that. Other stuff? Museums?
Nickerjones: I don't think any non-Sooner would choose Norman or any other OU city over Austin pretty much ever.

I love when Coloradoans say this. Hope you don't live in a Ski resort town because if Texas stopped showing up your resorts would close.
