Default Amplifier Connection Help Needed

Ok, so I bought a blu ray player but my amp only has 2 HD component connections in the back and they are both already being used.

I was wondering if I can connect an HDMI from the blu ray to the tv , and then audio through the amp? Or when you use HDMI does it overwrite any other sound connection (if that makes sense)?

This would be an annoying setup if it worked but I don't know if I'm too excited about buying a new amp.

i thought that hdmi carried the audio as well? you should have no problem doing it that way.

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

Yes, you can do that, although you may get better audio through the HDMI connector, depending on the capabilities of your amplifier.

You can also buy an HDMI component switcher from Monoprice for about $30-$40.

What are your two other HDMI devices? Does your amp have component video as well? I think I would give priority to the BluRay and connect one of yoru other devices via component video and optical audio.

See, the thing is, my amp has no HDMI, only component HD. I am running a 360 and an HD satellite receiver via component HD. My TV has HDMI, which I wanted to use for the video, then run optical audio through my amp.

This is the amp.

What make and model of Blu Ray player do you have? If it has 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs, then your best bet would be to connect to the 6/8 inputs on your amp. (With the HDMI video going directly to your TV as you suggest.) This will give you nearly equivelant (TrueHD) audio to using audio over HDMI. FYI, the optical cable is not capable of carrying TrueHD. (You may get 5.1 audio but it is of a lower quality.) I learned this the hard way.

Since you don't have HDMI inputs on your receiver, I'd just run an optical [toslink ] from your blu ray and your satellite STB. If you don't have enough optical inputs, buy an optical toslink switch and cables from Monoprice. They're cheap and will give you digital sound.

Also most TVs have an optical out, which you could run back to your audio reciever but most don't give 5.1 audio unless it is from an OTA signal.

I'm not sure why you're running component cables through your audio reciever. They're only video, maybe you mean composite RCA cables which are analogue.

Looking at the back of your reciever, I see that it has 4 optical inputs. This is what I'd use.

If I'm understanding what you're asking, you want to run the HDMI from the Blu-Ray to the TV for the video signal and the optical audio cable from the Blu-Ray to the amp for audio?

There should be no problem doing this, it's what I do for my Shaw HD box.
