thats somewhat surprising. i am assuming peters will be back for our game on wednesday, which would leave us with another forward not playing.
i guess i shouldn't be too surprised about ryder. maybe the increase in playing time will help. but i am sure it won't help his fragile emotions!

So, I'll be watching your Flames here in Houston on Thursday. Anything to look out for? I'm kinda doubting Kolanos will be back from the Wild for that game given how long Olden Nolan was out last time he got injured, but that might have been interesting. ETA: So much for that. Just word he's been sent back down.
Important couple of points for either team, so it should be a battle. Both play the night before but at least the Aeros are at home both games. First scheduling win all season for those guys, I think.

his emotional well being aside, going to Vegas could be very good for his game if he plays a top 6 role with PP time

why in the hell would they send Ryder down? His only problem is that McStupid puts him on a line with Cunning and Vandermeer and you wonder why he cant put up big numbers.
i really have no clue what sutter is doing.
Bring back frenchy when he has done nothing in vegas. great idea!!!

Honestly, I would think that it will be a quiet game. That's a long flight to take and do anything the same day, let alone play a game the night before and the night after. Heck, it was hard enough for me to fly down to San Antonio in April and roll out of the hotel bed in time to hit the Riverwalk. I'm kind of disappointed that Kolanos won't be with the Aeros.
How is Houston doing this season?

Looks like he will be back with the team after all. Not sure what kind of relationship he had with those guys, so I'm not sure what to expect out of that. You might be right about the Flames being flat, but every time I expect that from a team, they come out guns a'blazing. I've quit trying to figure it out.
The Aeros are ... inconsistent... but finding themselves little by little. Kolanos and Corey Locke have been a refreshing change of pace. Guys who can score seemingly at will... we're not used to that after last season where we had to cling to every one-goal lead like grim death and sacrifice virgins for consistently fantastic goaltending.
But we have 15 3-in-3s this season, none of which are completely at home. Way more than any other team, so they'll need to take advantage of teams facing travel fatigue like this since it's usually the other way around.

Kolanos didn't have many fans in the QC last year - he wasn't fond of playing defense and many thought he played lazy at times. I've no idea how his team-mates felt about him, though. I'm glad he's getting a shot with the Wild. Regardless of what most fans thought about him, he was still a very good player for QC last year. I hope that the game on Thursday is exciting, actually plan on getting that one on AHL Live On Demand.
I was impressed with Locke when he played with Hamilton last season, seemed to be a first liner in the AHL. I also see that Kassian is getting a full-season shot with the Aeros. Between him and Love, I think the Aeros should be a pretty tough team to play against.

Yeah, it's funny, I was VERY wary of Kolanos coming in because I had actually done a search here and other places and found some pretty negative stuff.
But he's a hero down here at the moment. I write about the team for ProHockeyNews.com and wrote this in pre-season which pretty much sums up why:
Quote:
To get an idea of the leap in firepower these additions potentially bring to the table, consider this: Schultz, Kolanos, and Locke were ranked among the top 25 scorers in the AHL last season. In contrast, the three highest scoring Aeros players last season were Joel Ward at number 139, Ryan Hamilton at 152, and Adrian Foster at 160. What’s more, only Hamilton is returning to the team this season.
|
So, Kolanos is friggin' superman here with almost a goal per game, most of them pretty dramatic and spectacular... never the dirty goals we're used to having to get. He was even made an alternate captain, which makes me think he's taken on a bit of a leadership role in the room. That's the (second to) last thing I thought I'd see. I dunno. Maybe he's just found a good spot here. Still a lot of season left and I know he wants back in the NHL pretty badly and Lemaire isn't impressed so far. Not sure how he'll wear that disappointment over the long haul of the season.
But yeah, team toughness isn't an issue, that's for sure. Love drops 'em twice a night, it seems. Kassian fights the big guys, and Scott... I'm not sure what you'd call what he does. Sort of an "angry pacifist" thing, but he's big and intimidating at least.

yeah, i am definitely not a fan of kolanos, but no one can deny he is usually the most skilled player when he is on the ice. he really helped us out last year and is off to an even better pace with the aeros this year. i am still surprised he doesn't get more call up time since he is a pretty good goal scorer. i still think if he played some defense, he would be hands down one of the best in the ahl and would get that callup. who knows though.

Kolanos does have a knack for scoring spectacular goals! It's that shot from the side of the net that somehow goes in....I really enjoy watching some of his moves! His defense is so weak, though. I'll be watching as well....
As for what kind of shape the team might be in by the time they get to Houston....they fly out of the QC at something like 5 am, going through Atlanta. There won't be time for a team meal after they get to Houston, so they're going to eat between flights in the Atlanta airport....apparently have something lined up that will be ready!
We've been having some bad weather here, so if the flight is delayed, it'll be airline pretzels and airport hotdogs as the team meal!!! They're hoping to get in early enough to get to the hotel and get a little rest before they have to show up at the arena. But they did pretty well when they played/flew to San Antonio earlier this season, so hopefully they're getting some extra rest during the week!!!

Wow, Sparky. That's crazy! I figured they'd have a direct flight since Houston's a Continental hub. I had no idea it was so convoluted for them. Thanks for the insight.
Oh and yeah, that shot from the side of the net is magic, though he hasn't potted one of those in a while. Mostly breakaways lately.

I know it's pretty rare for a team to have connecting flights, what with all the bags and equipment needed. I think most, if not all, of QC's flights last season were direct.
Speaking of flights, time to go and book my tickets
I've a pretty cool little story about Kolanos off the ice, but it's not something I'd put on here. Too many .... I'll say "fans" ... that would still rip him for it.

i do love myself a lot, but i was just reacting to what you said. and considering i was the only one in this thread to talk bad about kolanos, (though in a pretty mild way) i figured i would reply. there's not a whole lot of qc fans that post regularly, so who's to know...

I know that a lot of times they bus to Chicago so that they can get that direct flight, but I was just (in my own convoluted way!) repeating what Scotty said on Monday at Flames Forum. Maybe with the Wednesday game and the holidays, they couldn't do anything more than what they've got!
Is this St. Patrick's Day that you're speaking of??!
