Rally Against the Coalition - Calgary City Hall - Today 11:00 AM
I'm planning on attending in order to show my support for Stephen Harper and the Conservative party as well as to show my displeasure at what the coalition of the Libs/NDP/Bloc is trying to do.
Hope there is a good turn out. Come on down if you are against the coalition.

I am confused, which coalition government is the bad coalition government?
One coalition is worse than the other?
hmmm.... seems kind of hypocritical to protest one and not the other? Why not protest both?
If only the Conservatives had done themselves a favour in the last election and actually won... oh, except most Albertans mistakenly believe they did already, which really gets them off the hook I guess?

Have fun with that.
Wasn't there a coalition support rally yesterday?
Anyhow...I have a feeling this one will be poorly attended after the decision to prorogue for a couple months.
The issue has lost a bit of its passion....and with Xmas in the air, people busy attending to those kind of things, etc.

Kind of like when Martin didn't really win in 04? I'm so sick of hearing how the Conservatives didn't win. Technically, they won, they got more votes then anybody else in a legal, democratic fashion. I am by no means a supporter of the Conservatives, but this notion of a "minority win is not a win" just doesn't fly with me. This coalition is doing more damage then good and I can't really see anything good coming from it.

OK guys, we don't need to drag the debate about the issues into this thread too. Use the monster one for that, and this one to talk about the rally.
I was going to attend, but with the matter being on hold until January..... if this is still and issue then, I will attend a rally then.

There is no coalition government right now. Just a coalition (Liberal/NDP/Bloc) wanna be government. As of right now the Conservative party forms the government and they are not part of any coalition.

Again, right now, there is only ONE coalition (see above) and the current coalition is not acting in the best interest of Canadians.
Social Studies 101 is now dismissed.
Anyways .... back to the original point of the thread.... If you support what the Conservative government is doing, please attend this rally. If you don't, I hope you went to the Pro-coalition rally yesterday.... but I suspect not since I heard there were only 50 to 70 people attending.
Lets get a huge turn-out ok? Show the rest of Canada that we support our PM Stephen Harper (a Calgary Flames fan I might add).

One thing to note...
I agree that this isn't a foreground issue now, with the prorogue decision having been made, but if we let this fade too much into the background, the Coalition will start to feel more sure of themselves. The angry backlash from Canadians is the only thing that saved the PCs from a Monday confidence vote.
So yes, take a break... enjoy Christmas... but don't forget.

The Conservatives also need a coalition to hold a majority in government.
The Liberals and NDP are just as naturally aligned as 'right-wing Conservative' and 'central-small-c Conservative' are, so really either way the tie breaker is the Bloc. Which of course Quebec voters know and quite smartly exploit.
I hadn't been involved in the other thread though, I will go take a look but am not sure I can bare the hypocrisy I am sure I will see.... politics is politics, it is supposed to be about finding a balance of power through whatever legal means possible....

You really should switch this to the other thread. Not only would you be on topic there, but all of these points have been argued repeatedly for 200 pages of posts. No one really wants to rehash everything in a new thread.

Social Studies 101 eh?? Ohhhh, you are sooo smart!
Of course the Conservatives are part of a coalition (IF they want to hold power). Of course they have relied on an informal coalition (with a minority cabinet) so far, versus a formal coalition (with a coalition majority cabinet), but that makes it no less of a coalition.
They need votes from outside the party to hold power/survive a confidence vote. Some other party has to vote along with them, whether it be NDP, Liberal or Bloc.
If they had a majority government the current situation would not be possible.
And if the Conservatives themselves had better grasped this and better played with one of the others (like forming a formal coalition, versus aligning the interests of all other parties against them) none of this would have happened.
A whole lot of group-think going on out West it seems....
Claeren.

Not going to argue this further with you in this thread. If you want to continue with this, take it to the other thread.
The point of this thread is the Rally at City Hall.
If you agree, attend. If not, stay home.
As for those who agree but are still going to stay home because everything is on the back burner now until late January.... you're wrong.
This rally is very important. If we leave it til the end of January it will be too late to do anything.
The fact is that the confidence vote has not been cancelled. Its just been postponed. Once that happens, I suspect the Coalition will defeat the government. Once that happens. it will go to the GG and she will have to decide to either hold new elections which is what Harper will want or to give over the reigns of power to the coalition which is what Dion/Duceppe/Layton want.
Rallys like this will go a long way in influencing the GG's decision.

Actually it was a surprisingly good turnout today, they announced 2500, but I think that there were a great many more people there. Good speeches, it was nice to hear the national anthem at the start and the end. And the moments of silence at the beginning for last years school shooting anniversary and the three soldiers lost yesterday was nicely respected.
It was also nice to see a mix of young and old, it surprised me to see how many college age and early 20's people were there.

I would definitely agree. I also saw a lot of parents bringing their young kids.
In the back, I couldn't really hear the speeches very well, but what I heard I definitely agreed with.

I was going to go to the Edmonton rally but got called on to work, however it was said only 300 people showed up. That's the difference between Edmonton and Calgary I suppose.
