Ancestry?
Related to the age/height/birthplace threads, what's your ancestry? Where are they from? When did they migrate to where they are now? Any interesting stories about them?

My great-great-great uncle was a bare-knuckle street fighter in London in the 1800s.

I'm a typical Canadian mutt. My paternal side was German-Russian from the Odessa region. The area they were from is now part of Romania. On the maternal side, Austrian and French. My French ancestry was from the Savoie region, and the Austrian roots are from Vienna.
My wife's ancestry is pure blue blood though, all the way back to the Norman invasion.
I'm third generation Canadian on both sides, and my wife is fourth or fifth generation.

My mother is a second generation Canadian, but her ancestry is German.
My father was a first generation Canadian. His father came from Germany and his mother came from the Crimean Peninsula.

My paternal grandparents are both Canadian of British descent.
My maternal grandparents came over from the Ukraine in my grandmothers case, and Belarus in my grandfather's, though his birth certificate was Polish. We're guessing he was born in an area where the border on the map kept changing.
So, second generation Canadian on my mom's side, and at least third generation on my fathers.

Father from Cairnryan in Scotland. Mother from Prestwick, Scotland. When I hear the bagpipes I feel that stirring to crush some Englishmen's skull with my "targe".

My mom is completely Danish. Born there, but moved to Canada fairly young.
My dad is born in Canada. His parents are Canadian, but grandparents from both sides were all born in England somewhere.

My Great Great Grandfather, on my fathers side, moved to Cochrane from Virginia and started ranching in 1882. My Grandmother, on my fathers side, was from Scotland and met my grandfather when she was working as a nurse during WWII after he was seriously wounded in Burma.
My mothers side of the family are all from Ireland. Her fathers family came out in covered wagons in the late 1800's and lived in a sod house near Moosiman, SK. Her mothers parents were both born in Ireland and moved to Toronto when they were young children at the turn of the last century.

Some of my ancestors (those who's surname I have) were British colonists in the 1650s, settling in Rowley, Mass. They came over on the same ship that brought the first printing press to North America. In addition to British, I also have Scottish, Irish, Welsh (or possibly Manx), and some protestant Italian, via Switzerland and France. Some of my ancestors were loyalists who came to Canada after the American Revolution. Another was an Orangeman militia in the Upper Canada rebellion. It's a pretty mixed bag, although most of it is from the British Isles. My dad is a geneology enthusiast so we have most branches of the family traced back ten generations or more. Oh, also, I'm inbred: my parents have a common great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparent.

My parents are from Bosnia. My father is Croatian and mother was actually a mix of Polish and Ukrainian.
Our family name has a latin root and apparently originated on the Croatian Island of Rab which used to be a Roman/Italian colony, so it's likely if I went back far enough, my ancestry is Italian.
