i have dealt with a very similiar incident first hand....it is the worst smell ever.....EVER!

In Medicine, there is such a thing as Maggot therapy. You put a bunch of them in an open wound, and they only eat the dead tissues and ignore the healthy tissue. It helps prevent infection and sepsis. Old school technique
