Reactions to petty vandalism
So I was riding the c-train to school from work today, and I noticed a couple of young teenagers (like 13-14) holding up their coats and such.
Eventually I realized the kids where "tagging" with a sharpie.
I then confronted them (basically yelling what the hell are you doing) and hit the emergency button and told the driver what was happening
As we drove to the next stop, The kids started yelling back at me (turns out there was about 5 in this group) and some of the other passengers joined in then "argument" most of them for what I had done.
When the train reached the station, the driver allowed the doors to open, and the kids took off running.
Afterwards a big argument broke out between a couple of passengers on if i was right or not to try and stop the kids and get them in trouble...
It got surprisingly heated (I didn't get involved)
is that really some peoples opinions, that we should just let these punks go because they're 'young' and all their doing is drawing on some train?

I would have laughed at them.. Like wow lil rebels writing on a train with a marker.. Why not get some talent and balls and do a huge mural on a busy overpass. That way they get busted by the cops for something bigger.. Just goad them into something they'd eventually get caught for.

I say good for you.
I likely wouldn't have had the stones to confront them.

Well done. The reason there is so much evil in the world is that too many good people just silently watch and never stand up.

Good for you.
I can't believe anyone would actually say anything to you against it.
Did the driver ever talk to you?

Yeah, he sauntered back after he allowed the doors to open..
Sadly he then got distracted by the argument that was then taking place over if I was right to stop the kids/hit the emergency button

It's pretty sad that there are people who would openly defend vandalizm. Part of the cost of the train ticket goes to cleaning it up and I personally don't want to pay for little johhny to have his kicks. His parents should.

Vandals are punks. You did the right thing ... what's the old saying. Evil grows when good people do nothing, or something to that effect.

Youth without rebellion is like cake without icing, it's weak. I think a city should represent its people and we're not all sterile and clean. Good/clever/artistic vandalism is alot more likely to brighten up my day than bad vandalism could sour it. But.... I'm siding with the OP on this one, those kids were being lazy and if you're lazy, someones bound to give you hell. If they aren't willing to go bigger and badder, they should just stay home.
Littering, not there's something that I froth at the mouth at.

In my day if those darn teenagers were vandalizing a train that we were on, well then it would be frontier justice. We'd feed em into the furnace and we could power the train for 50 miles on their burning corpses while saving 7 cents worth of coal.
We were all vigilant and we liked it that way.

So, let me get this correct - other adult type people were getting mad at you because you confronted vandals and hit the emergency button?
Maybe you interrupted their steamy adult novel reading, or perhaps their loud cell phone conversation had to be put on hold....how dare you!

The only reasonable explanation I could come up with for people giving him the gears about pushing the button was it sometimes takes a while to get things sorted out and the train moving again. If someone was cutting it close to get to work/job interview/home to a sick child/etc and a long delay could have some consequences I could understand them being annoyed over a relatively minor 'emergency'.

He has to allow the doors to open. If he doesn't he's locking in everyone on the train.
If they took off running then Mission: Accomplished. They were spooked. I bet one of them will reconsider his pathetic little tagging career next time he's on the train.
I wouldn't want some kid to get a criminal record out of something so lame though. Would they?

It's just a small misdemeanour, isn't it? Slap on the wrist and a fine. Can't imagine that would go on someone's permanent record.

Probably not, but it would be nice to see little Timmy Thug getting home to his parents after being given a nice juicy fine for public vandalism and being forced to go in on Saturday to scrub a train or two with a toothpick.

How about making the effing little pukes clean up thier vandalism?
Or would you prefer your tax dollars being used to clean the mess?
