Default Edmonton in Eastern Final? WTF?

Hey Guys,

I am about as casual a football fan as you can find, so please forgive my ignorance here. I live in Dallas, and was flipping through the channels and came across the Grey Cup Final on Versus! I called my brother over and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the Stamps roll over Mtl. First game either of us had seen in about 10 years - and if the CFL was on more often down here, we certainly would be watching it a lot more!

To my question - During the broadcast they mentioned Mtl had beaten Edm in the Eastern Final. How does that happen? Did they switch conferences? Was it some wildcard thing?

And how bad were you salivating at the prospect of a Cgy, Edm Grey Cup? I mean, we used to talk about it as kids playing touch in the back yard, but I never figured it could actually happen!

Anyway GO STAMPS GO! And congratulations to the hardcore Stamps fans on your latest championship.

If one of the conferences suck, they do allow a cross over team.

If the 4th place team in one division has a better record then the 3rd place team in the other division, there's a cross over for the playoffs.

In this case, Edmonton's record was better then the putrid Hamilton and Toronto teams' records in the regular season. Edmonton thus played Winnipeg in that crossover semi final, and won, to play Montreal in the Eastern Final.

Because Edmonton's not really that good either, they lost to Montreal....and no, I personally was not anticipating a Calgary/Edmonton final because that would've meant "cheering" for an Edmonton team to win a particular game, something Flames fans and proper-thinking Calgarians would never consider.

If the fourth place team in one of the divisions has more points than the third place team in the other division, they take cross over and take the playoff spot of the thrd place team in the other division.

Edmonton was fourth place in the west, but had more points then both Toronto and Hamilton in the east (Winnipeg as well, actually), so they crossed over.

I just hope it's a Calgary/Edmonton or Calgary/Saskatchewan Grey Cup in 09, since it's in Calgary and either one of those games would be a lot of fun to see live.
