Listening to QR77 right now and a caller suggested that for the player awards the players themselves should vote and not the media. Players would not be able to vote for members of their own team.
Given the completely laughable selection process we have now, I say this would work wonders.
If you're reading this, good call; except for the fact you were drunk, rambled on too long and got cut-off in mid-sentence. 
Good idea about the players voting though.
