Default iTunes USA Store

anyone here a pro at cracking the iTunes store so I can download content exclusive to their USA customers?

I was given a redeem code but can't use it because i'm not in the USA. I would sure love to be able to redeem my gift!

Paging Fanin80 ...

I'm pretty sure you just need a valid zip code, but I'll wait for the grand master.

FanIn80 needs to make his pick in the TV draft first...

Did you sign up for a new US account?

Create a US account, and use a valid zip code (someone suggested '90210' to me).

I don't have time to find it atm, but I posted here a couple months ago the steps to use to create the US iTunes goodness.

I'll check back when I go for lunch, and if it hasn't been bumped, I'll find it for you.

Haha. "Legal" is relative in my books! I might have to break a few import laws to buy my TV shows, but I still buy them.

(I don't buy music on iTunes, I buy CDs! )

Hey Fan, I've been meaning to ask, do you have a preferred buyer from ebay for credits or do you just go with whoever is selling? If I recall you've never had a problem getting the redeem code from anybody?

As a quick aside, My wife and I have been watching so little tv lately that we've even batted the idea around of just getting rid of cable and just getting a few season passes from itunes and then streaming it all through apple tv.

I just go with random auctions. Not always the cheapest, since a lot of them are just crooks, but I don't have anyone in particular.

I know what you mean about canceling cable, too. It's very difficult to go back to watching regular TV after you've used an Apple TV.

Yeah, I got a beta invite a while back. I installed it and poked around and then went back to the vanilla install. It was pretty nice!

Just made my first ebay purchase of itunes money. Holy crap ... i'll probably do that again in the near future. There are some sweet deals if you fish around in there for a while.

With relation to boxee, isn't a lot of the cooler stuff (hulu, comedy central) only available in the states?

Just be careful though. A lot of the "super" deals (like $100 gift card for $40) are actually gift cards that were bought with stolen credit card numbers (or other Bad Things™).

When Apple gets alerted to the fraud (the guy who bought the card in the first place, not you), they strip the funds from your iTunes account and then close your account with a message asking you to email them. When you send them the email, they tell you why they closed it and then they re-open it for you and send you on your way. The good news in all of this, is that they don't revoke anything you've already purchased, they just empty the remaining balance.

It's happened to me a coupe of times so far. I'm getting better now at picking my auctions, though.

Interesting ... were you able to get your money back from ebay or were you pretty much SOL? When you say you're getting better at picking your auctions do you mean you are focusing on people with high positive response ratings? Any other tips?

Yeah, I'm focusing more on people with higher feedback ratings. Even though their auctions are a bit higher.

I've had it happen twice to me, but the first one was a $50 card I bought for $20 and used up right away buying a full TV season. I ended up losing like $0.75 or something, so i didn't bother.

The second time, though, was when I bought a $200 card for $95. I ended up losing about $50 (of the card value). This particular sale irked me, since the guy took 3 days to email me the code after I paid him and didn't bother leaving any feedback for me either, so I opened up a claim with PayPal on it. Gave them all the details on it, and they gave me my full $95 back.

I guess, technically, I came out pretty good on that second one, but I don't think it's something I'd want to do again. I mean, I bought both of those auctions with honest (albeit, naive) intentions, so it's not like I set out to scam anyone. I just made sure I got my money back.

Anyway, like I said earlier, now I stick to people with higher feedback ratings. I pay a bit more, but I get peace of mind in exchange.

Well now you've got me freaked out.

Deal too good to be true? Check
Taking sweet-ass time emailing code? Check

He had a 100% rating though, that's the only thing I'm holding onto right now.

Yep, they'll all have 100% rating. It's the number of sales you have to look for. Higher number = more trustworthy (in this case, at least). People selling iTunes cards with 50 or more sales spread out over the year are less likely to be selling stolen cards.

The guys with 20(ish) sales in total, and all in the last month, are the ones that just haven't been caught yet.

(Generally speaking, of course. There will always be low-volume people whose Grannie sent them a $100 iTunes card for their birthday, and they're selling it on line for $60 because they'll never use it. For the most, though, stay away from SWEET deals from low-volume sellers.)
