Default The Black Friday Thread

I've never gone to one before, but after going to the US for the first time in years a few months back, I'm almost certain to go this time to shop. Has anyone ever gone and what kind of deals are there to expect? Any good stories or old ladies being trampled?

Boxing day definitely kicks Black Friday's butt. My wife and I went once, and everything was the same price as the day before and the day after, except you get the privilege of elbowing your way through crowds of obese, smelly people while waiting in line to get into stores that stock anything you'd actually want to give to a loved one.

For us, it's a good day to spend at home. Not shopping.

I'm thinking one reason may be that the two sales are sort of apples and oranges. The purpose of Black Friday is to put retailers "in the Black"--and to kick off the holiday shopping season with a big day in Sales. The purpose of Boxing Day sales is to clear out inventory that will be very hard to move in the new year. The latter will always lead to better prices for consumers.

If you don't like crowds, the sale prices aren't worth it. I went shopping on Black Friday for the first time last year. I thought it would be fun to spend all day with my best friend, people watch and get the great deals I've always heard about. I was suprised at the small number of significant savings on anything I shopped for. The best deal I got was 50% off wrapping paper and ribbon. Everything else I bought was either not on sale or at a similar 15-20% discount you'd get year round with regular retail sale rotations.

Watching people that day in stores and parking lots did provide endless entertainment. We'll probably do it again and get a kick out of people watching. I don't feel pressure to get all my shopping done it one day so I don't run around with the same level of itensity as other shoppers.

I've been in the States for BF but never went to the sales. I hate crowds. I don't go the Labour Day sales either. It's only money; not worth it, in my view.

i think the economy is so crappy down here that the retailers will have an awful holiday season, and there will be loads of 'going out of business' sales after Christmas and in the new year - i'd wait

engadget.com has had a few postings about deals they know about. They're pretty good at aggregating them.
