Default Random question: How do studios determine when to release DVDs?

My friend and I were having this discussion and for some reason the fact that I don't know the answer is driving me bonkers.

So I was wondering if studios have a set period between when the movie is out of theatres to when they release the DVD.

I don't think there is a set time. I think the studios try and determine the best time to release a particular movie to maximize dvd sales, based on the movies target audience, box office performance, public demand and genre. For example, christmas movies being released the following christmas, like Fred Claus. Scary/violent movies being released closer to Halloween, etc.

Burning DVD's takes a long time. Duh.

Eastern girl is right, it's based on when they can enter the market strongest.

It always makes me laugh when they 're-release' a movie back into theaters a week before it comes out on DVD/Bluray and brand it as 'Now in theaters' on half the ads and 'now on DVD' on the other half. Creative marketing I suppose.

Whenever theater ticket sales fall off, same with the cycle for albums where an artist will stay on the road promoting and releasing singles, if it's selling. Soon as sales drop off it's time to head back to the studio.
