Where to look for employment?
My wife is currently looking to get back into the work force after a 1 year off to spend time with the kids.
The workopolis, monster and calgary job shops seem to only offer insurance sales, recruitment and retail.
She worked for Telus and Telus Advertising/Superpages/Yellowpages for 10 years in various capacites from customer service to sales consultant. She would be best suited for the go to person in a small business (Is that a title? and yes every company has one of them, you know you do)
I know there are loads of companies looking for good, hard working empolyees but how do you weed through the crap to find them.
Seriously, the garbage potential employers that have tried to contact her recently are just incrediably bad, ie Telemarking schemes, to "you start your only company with your own money, we provide training and you could be making $5000 a week in now time." BS
Help Calgarypuck, if you changed jobs recently how did you find it?

Very good site, and beats the pants off the usual job sites.

When I was looking, I had a lot of issues with Monster actually. A lot of fraudulent ads, saying it was one job and it would turn out to be something entirely different. It would say office job, but it would turn out to be door to door sales. I had one that said that I was hired, without meeting me or anything, all I had to do was send them all my banking and credit card information.
I used the eluta site posted above, and also the government job listings.
And everything that 4x4 said.

As for these online sites that promise the right employees and the best jobs, they just sound bogus altogether. I'm not surprised to hear your assessment.
My opinion is that your wife needs to narrow down the fields she's looking to work in (and is good at) and then go around and kick tires. Make custom resumes for the various jobs she's willing to take and then work the phone like a maniac to find out which companies are hiring and for which positions. Then drop off specific resumes that tout her skills in the fields that those companies are looking for.
Example: your wife may be good at book keeping AND oil & gas secretarial. Google the hell out of local companies that are in oil & gas, and google book keeping positions and make a list and drop off (read: email) resumes, and show up for interviews.
I guess I'm also saying that great jobs don't just land on your plate. Seek them out, have a strategy, and don't be afraid to say no. And don't settle for crap. There are lots of places looking for the right person. But most of these places don't advertise in the Herald or the Sun or on dorkopolis. They find their employees through word of mouth or by employees finding them.
Consider it 'pre-employment employment'.

Completely agree with you 4x4
She is looking for something other then telecommunications otherwise Telus would be an option.
The eluta site is fantastic, surprised I haven't heard of it prior to tonight.
