Have to have your employeer fill out a Record of Employment. This just states that you where working and got laid off. The employeer has to give a reason for the layoff, as well as the number of hours that you have worked etc.

You need to have a set # of hours worked before you can claim EI.
When I tried this a few years ago, I was about 50 hours short. If you are short on hours, you can file an appeal if you so wish.

I think if I remember correctly, the minimun you have to work in a year is about 930 hours.

If your wife is only off for a couple months, I don't think it would be worth the hassle. Plus it takes about 6-8 weeks before you start collecting anyway. And if you have to appeal, tack on a few more weeks at least.

EI is very inefficient. The tax we pay for that is too high. The excess funds is just dumped into general revenues for the Liberals to waste

There is a two week wait from the day you get laid off until the day you are elegible to recieve benefits. Its the payment that starts 4-6 weeks later.

If I was going to be off work for more then two weeks I would apply. You deduct, so might as well take advantage of the benefits, even if it is for only a few months.

I don't know if its exaclty the same, but when my wife went on Maternity leave we filled out everything online and the website pretty mcuh walked us through it all.

If memory serves, all we needed was her ROE, bank account infor for direct deposit, and thats about it.
