I posted a comment from an Islamic cleric in another thread where he said the tsunami was God's warning that followers must be more devout, the classic religious fear/punishment mechanism.

This story is getting more attention now, how religion is explaining an angry God.

"God is angry with Aceh people, because most of them do not do what is written in the Koran and the Hadith," the collected sayings and actions of the prophet Muhammad, explained Cut Bukhaini, 35, an imam. "I hope this will lead all Muslims in Aceh to do what is in the Koran and its teachings. If we do so, God will be merciful and compassionate."

Bukhaini, surrounded by refugees camping on the grounds of his Baitush Shakhir Mosque in Banda Aceh's Ulee Kareng district, said people here were guilty of forgetting their obligation to pray five times a day and of concentrating too much on earning money rather than living according to their religion.

"I think people were making love before marriage, doing bad things, forgetting to pray to God," said Jack Solong, 25, a waiter and dishwasher at a popular Banda Aceh coffee shop. "God punished us. I believe that.

"Before the tsunami, all the people were full of bad conduct," he said. "Boys were sitting close to the girls. There was corruption in the government. This was God's punishment."

"We have to make a lot of changes in our lives, and this is God's way of letting us know," said Hetty Meutia Dewy, an agriculture student at Bogor University and a member of the Islamic Association of Students. "The imams have said it was a warning. They said God loves the Aceh people, but the tsunami was a warning to be better people.

"The mosques are central for Muslims," said Mohammed Maksouni, 36, a leader of the group, explaining why refugees instinctively flowed into mosques after they fled the wave. "And also, the houses were destroyed but the mosques were left standing."

I would imagine its the same message being played out among all religious groups.

I am sure the fact that the Mosques were built as sturdy as possible had nothing to do with it.

Ugh. Not much nice to say here for an non-religeous believer.

Now excuse me while I go sit too close to a girl ...

The ######s come out of the woodwork every time something bad happens and they blame the evil-doers. Your close-sitters, drinkers, non-church-goers, the gays, feminists, people like me. We are to blame. Funny thing though, how come so many religious people get swept up into these disasters? Not pious enough? Too pious? Clumsy hand of god?

God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

That's just the beginning from Jerry Falwell. His pal Pat Robertson concurs.

Funny how easily such a tragedy can be turned around as a recruiting tool. Well less funny than sad and disturbing I guess, but you've gotta at least chuckle.

One day I'd like for one religious leader to turn around and say "I believe God is angry because we've skewered and tainted his message and image so badly in an effort to serve our own needs that He is punishing us."

Not that I think that would be the truth either, but I really think it would be a little more honest and responsible of the religious leaders. Though I won't be holding my breath while waiting.

My advice to all Muslims is that if sitting too close to a girl or having premarital sex with her is enough to set God off on a crazy water rampage, then you've probably already done worse and are on your way to hell, so just sit back, relax and have a few drinks. Or like the Irish, a LOT of drinks. Cheers!

"the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time - calling upon God"

Sometimes I wish I was this delusional. Life would be much simpler. What a bunch of arse-clowns.

It's times like this that make me proud that I'm agnostic.

If that was the case, I'd hate to see what God has in store for people in North America.

It never fails to amaze me how much damage fanatics do to religions of all types. It also never fails to amaze me how quickly other people grab onto what these fanatics say or do and then paint ALL believers with the same brush.

I feel sorry for all those people who are conned by fanatics to beat themselves up for failing to be the perfect person that their human nature won't allow them to be. How much better it would be to believe in a God who doesn't expect much from them but loves them in spite of their short comings!

How many gods are there up there?

If that god didn't like boys sitting next to girls, maybe we should get a 'cooler' god to go over there and kick his butt!!

Seriously though, how many gods are there??

Perhaps rather than asking, "How many gods are there?", we should be asking, "How many interpretations are there of who God is?"

OK, sure...........perhaps.

How many then?

But if there are a billion different gods..........er, sorry......interpretations, then what's the point?

You can bend anything that happens to you, good or bad, and throw a religious spin on it.

If any people out there think boys sitting too close to girls causes tsunamis and death, then it's just another day I'm glad I'm not brainwashed by any of that religious jibber jabber.

I would like to think it simply shows to what kind of extremes some nuts will go to control people and get them to do their dirty work for them. To the point where brain-washed people are willing to strap on bombs and blow up innocent women and children in hopes of appeasing this fictitious angry god.
