Default Painting Red Walls, more specific Flames Red, need suggestions.

So i just bought a new condo and i want my living room flames red with an accent wall of black. I know there is a thread on this already but nobody has quite talked about primers.

I've went and picked up a red/pink primer from home depot. But lately i've discovered lots and lots of people suggesting that a grey primer is the best way to go for painting red saying that using the red/pink primer will take about 4-7 coats of red paint to get even and look good, while the grey will be about 2-3. If i have to i will throw out the pink primer and get grey if this is the case. I have 6 walls to do so i don't want to be doing 7 coats of red in a worst case scenario.

Any help, suggestions or stories about painting red walls?

This past summer I got some red (and black, and grey, and beige) painted on my wall. Since I didn't end up doing most of it myself, I can only say I'm pretty sure the grey was used, and I think the red/pink stuff was attempted but didn't work quite as well. In any case, it looks great now, and I wish I could be of more help.

Doesn't home depot sell team specific color paint?

I painted the bathroom in my basement with Flames Red. Got the team matched paint at Home Depot who also suggested the pink primer. I put on about 4 coats of paint. I think it looks good, but my wife thinks it needs another coat.

If you're looking for a deep red, you need a dark basecoat. A white basecoat tends to start the color at the pink side of the spectrum.

I painted my son's room in the Calgary Flames theme. We did an accent wall in Calgary Flames red and the ledge around the room was red as well. The rest is white, and we got a Calgary Flames border from Sears. Oh, and we painted the closet all red too.

We got the paint from Home Depot, they have the exact colors for the NHL teams. We got a primer, tinted pink. I used two thick coats of the primer, before I did the red, but you really only need to use one coat of primer... but I am wondering if it helped eliminate the amount of red coats I had to do. I only did 4 or 5 coats of red paint. I've heard of people having to do 8 coats of red paint. Red is the hardest color to paint on a wall due to the amount of coats, but you'll be happy with the end result.

After the 1st coat it looked kind orangy, pink, but the Home Depot chick told me that it wouldn't look all the red after the 1st coat. She warned me that it will take a few coats. With each coat I could see how it was going to turn out, the hardest thing was making sure the paint was even. The red soaked up more in some parts of the wall than it did others, so it took me more coats just to get it applied evenly. I have a picture somewhere, I'll have to find it and post it.
